EL Mid to Single Mid

Hey all, so i'm a bit nuts i've gone through at least 15 exhaust iterations on my F80 and have found that the EL setup has to be the best sound this car could make. As always I go and mess it up and buy a single mid again (I had a single mid for 3 years before the EL). Going back to the single mid it sounds way different than the last time. it sounds like it drones and buzzes. Im wondering if I just need to get used to it or the exhaust just has problems. Anyone else go from EL to single and find the sound to be extra weird? Thanks in advance, i'm definitely going to do a write up with my different exhaust setups for anyone who is interested.

I've had single mid on my old F82 and now F80. Never had drone or buzz issues. Could something be making contact?

What are your other exhaust modifications, if any?

16 iterations, you should be a pro at figuring this out don't you think? Ask yourself..... What changed from before ....

I'd start with the easiest (and cheapest) thing first and just make sure everything is secure and tight, and especially not rattling against the cross brace. I have the AA EL's and after installing it and checking things twice, they were rattling against the cross brace. I didn't think it would be an issue because I used the AA cross brace which has more clearance, but sure enough it was rattling at certain RPMS. I ended up loosening the middle clamps, then put a small block of wood between the mid pipe and the brace, and then retightened the clamps with the block of wood still in place (then obviously removed the block once tightened). Doing that completely solved the issue. It may be the same for the single mid-pipe.

Curious if you've tried the Valvetronic V2 and your thoughts if you have? It's actually why I clicked your thread, thinking you're running their V2 which is the EL to Single catback. I have it sitting but am not sure now if I want to run it.

I wouldn't get one. Valvtronic isn't my style. You'd be better off with AA EL to dinan which I had and loved. Decided I'll go back to it I just can't stand the S55 sound.

Tried everything I know. Turns out I just don’t love the exhaust so that's why I think something is wrong.

AA single mid to dinan right now but I was EL to dinan which is perfection. I just get bored and decide to mess around.

I have been in love with my AA EL non-res since the day I bought it.

Currently: stock muffler, AA EL non-res, stock DP.

No tune but almost leaning toward bm3 for the ability to control the valves. I want them open 24/7 in sport+.

If adding the dinan is perfection, I might be on the hunt for that especially if you have had that many different exhausts. I have def seen some of them listed in the for sale threads. 😂

But… I do have a rattle with it. Just changed my rear brakes and tried bending heat shield but might have to do the woodblock method in the brace for more room.

Yeah I do love my EL I decided it's going back on tomorrow. I should've left well enough alone. I'm going back to Stock DP, AA EL resonated, and Dinan which I believe to be perfection. I'll post a write up soon with videos.

Interesting. Can you elaborate on not your style? My mind set picking it up was that it'd be mixing characteristics of the EL and the single into 1 exhaust.

Catless resonated/AA single/remus = cats meow. If you’re running the 🌽 it’s even better.

I tried catless and it was definitely the worst sound to come out of the car. I'd consider carted dp but catless was too much. I have to admit E85 smells pretty good lol!

This is my setup as well and have been happy with it. I am curious to try the resonated rear section of the AA EL to clean up the sound a little. Current volume is perfect though.

RE the valves & the tune: I am currently BM3 stage 1 and it's perfect. (More power is not this car's issue) For the valve control, just use the engine settings:

- Comfort (Set to M1) quiet and stealthy
- Sport (Set to M2) valves open, no burbles/pops minus the occasional pop on upshift or decel. (Did require customization in BM3) Optimal throttle mapping
- Sport + valves open, burbles set to juvenile mode. Nearly never use. Throttle mapping is too aggressive.

I keep the valves in stock mode with my CG controller. Burbles are coded off for me since I absolutely hate them. I have the Dinan piggy back which is pretty good.

Get the AA EL mid pipes and get AWE switchpath muffler. You’ll need an exhaust shop to create custom connecting pipes. Best sound you’ll get out of the stock turbo S55.

I really liked having this setup:
- Stock downpipes
- AA EQL (non-resonated) midpipe
- Stock Competition muffler.

Perfect setup for daily driving in my opinion. Loud and rowdy with the valves open with an exotic sounding tone to it. Comfort and quiet with the valves closed.

When I get back into an F8x, that will probably be my same setup. (I may dabble in a DINAN Muffler like the OP mentioned.)

I have had the single and the equal length setup on my car, and I liked both. I prefer the single because it sounds the cleanest, in my opinion.

your best bet is to sell the midpipe and re-install the equal length which you actually liked

Already did! The single just isn't for me.
