Sound insulation
I like almost everything about the F80 M3 Competition, the looks, the amazing handling and performance. One thing I can't stand is the tyre noise on bad UK roads.
Is there anything that can be done to reduce this without changing the wheel size? Has anyone insulated their car with products like dynomat? If so, how were the results? Please no answers like 'Buy a Lexus/Non M 3 series/G80/Audi', 'not the car for you'. |

Didn't you already make a similar thread about this? https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2118025
I would change your tires first, maybe one that is more comfort oriented than performance like an all season tire. Also, make sure what you're hearing is tire noise, and not engine or exhaust noise. |

It's definitely tyre noise, on smooth roads the car is quiet enough. I find the car engine to be pretty much silent in efficient mode. |

Tires in the class called “Grand Touring” are supposed to be about comfort and quiet operation. But remember the bushings and body in the M3 are designed with performance in mind. So there’s only so much you can do. How about a nice 540i? 😉

I added sound deadening to the trunk floor, under back seat and the doors… made a big difference in the CS but I don’t think the CS comes with a lot of sound deadening but it it substantially quieter than before. With less than 20lbs added

That's good to hear. I think the competition is similar to the CS with the lack of sound deadening.

I'd like an M3 for a year and then maybe chop it in for a 530/540i. |

What sort of sound deadening materials did you use? Traditional dynamat I have learned is more to help with vibrations/resonance rather than 'quieting' the interior. But I'm only on the first stage of educating myself here. Appreciate your thoughts/experience.

I'm curious to know as well. I've heard the same about Dynomat but then others have said it made a big difference.

Different tires can make all the difference. I find the Michelin PS4S makes a loud, resonating cabin noise in the F80 on some highway surfaces that my Pilot Alpin and my Cup 2's do not.

It did make a big difference in the quality of the sound system, and eliminated all the rattles from the one small 10" sub I had in the trunk. But, it did nothing to keep 'road' noise down. I never did figure out if that was solely due to it being a soft top roadster, or if it was because the dynamat wasn't expected to do that work. |

There are mixed reviews out there. Someone on the M3 cutters forum said he just applied it to the boot and rear wheel arches and it made a big difference. |

I had an ‘05 s2000 with a Mugen hardtop and I found the interior to be very quiet. It’s probably the noise transmission through the soft top which wasn’t affected by the dynamat you installed. |
