Wire brush on a drill made short work of the soot in the pipe. Switched to a dremel with fine wire wheel for the outside edge. Had to resort to a bath of diluted CLR to remove the soot and rust (from the riviets) from the clearcoat. Finished with a coat of wax. I'm no pro but they're 100% better than they were
