This is gonna be a good car, unlike many modern BMWs, this is really big step in right direction. This gonna be lighter, it has high-revving turbo engine, and we will jugeits sound in person, as camera tend to screw things up.

So, lets wait and im sure - bmw will not screw up its most legendary car.

I think The F80 codename is just a rumor that surprisingly is popular in Bimmerpost. I mean is it confirmed yet? It just doesn't make sense. The new M5 also has very unique parts that doesn't share with it's non-M siblings. But it still is a F10.

Considering the fact that two of my favorite engines BMW has ever made are the S85 and S65 F1-derived engines, it's going to be sad to see the S65 go with this new model. And a question for all of you who say the S65 sounded lazy: How can an engine that revs to 8400 RPM sound lazy?

But I am happy that BMW M is returning to their old ways of building engines based on normal BMW powerplants with the S55, and an I6 definitely belongs in an M3/4. And it's great they put the car on a diet.

As for the sound, it wasn't awful and I'm sure it will grow on me. Plus, it's still in development so the actual car should sound better.

In reality, the S65 does sound lazy with the stock exhaust, that was my biggest grip coming from an E46 M3.

I think we can all agree that the S65 and S55 are/will be engineering marvels and will of course make they're owners very happy.

Having owned a tuned 335i and now an M3, I can see the merits of both approaches: torquey, turbos with neck snapping, if not linear, delivery are a lot fun and the turbine-like power of a high revving, hyper-sensitive all aluminum V8 is intoxicating WHEN you can open it up.

The turbocharger itself acts as a muffler, when you have an N/A motor the intake piping is very short. Basically you have an air filter, a short intake tube, and an intake manifold. In order for a turbocharged and intercooled engine to work properly, you have to send the air through a filter, through some piping into the cold(er) side of the turbo, through more piping into the intercooler(s), and then through even more piping into the manifold. All of this piping is generally plastic and the longer it is, the less sound you will hear and this is in addition to the turbocharger and intercooler which both act to reduce the amount of sound you can hear simply because the turbo is made of pretty thick metal and the air going through it is being accelerated at tens of thousands of RPMs so it's generating its own whoosing sounds.

You can make a turbocharged motor's exhaust system sound pretty great (see: AMG) but you'll never end up with much of an intake growl in a production car that needs to meet so many regulations.

Thanks for the explanation. Now that I think about it that makes since. All of that twisting and turning would dramatically slow down the air. There has to be some way to simplify that process though.

People always come up with increasingly asinine "proofs" that their *subjective opinion* is "correct". The more elaborate it gets, the dumber it sounds.

At the end of the day, *sound* is subjective. What this clip shows is that some people do *not* like the sound of a turbo 6, and some people do. Thats it. Nothing more. There is no "right". "Tradition" is BS. There is no "wrong". No one is "but hurt". People just like what they like.

One thing though is that this is no more "traditional" than the E92. So that is total BS. Last i checked no prior M3 was *forced induction*

The E30 was a FOUR CYLINDER normally aspirated 7000RPM redline

The E36 was a six cylinder inline normally aspirated with a 7000RPM redline

The E46 was a six cylinder inline normally aspirated with a 7900RPM redline

The E92 is a V8 normally aspirated with an 8400RPM redline

The only *universal constant* is >normally aspirated<. So anyone who wants to claim "tradition" because of a "return" to an inline 6, and at the same time claim that anyone who doesnt see that somehow doesnt "understand BMW", is being ridiculous because last i checked the M3 *started* with a 4 and *never* had a turbo.

All of that said, to me "tradition" is the *sum* of its parts. It isnt an engine, its a general guiding principal. Some of this sounds like the crap you hear in the Porsche community over the switch from air to water cooling. I am sure the M3/M4 will be a solid performer and a great addition to the family. *Personally*, I don't like the high strung forced induction sound at all, but I understand that some love it. To me this vid reminded me of my modded Evo X sound in some ways. I also dont like that the coupe has become an "M4", but thats a BMW branding decision.

Like any new addition this one will have vocal detractors that declare "BMW over" (as has happened *every* generation) and will pick up lots of new fans (and lots of once vocal, but suddenly quiet converts from the older model once they are used and cheaper )

Overheating should be a real concern. Both M5 and M6 GC went limp mode lap after lap at COTA this week. Not cool. Not cool at all.

The CCBs are phenomenal though.

seriously though I think it sounds cool. I like my v8 better but I am sure in person it will sound even better and with an exhaust will sound amazing.
