MST Intake Owners - Quick Question
This is going to sound a little weird, but any chance anyone that's running the MST cold air intake on an F8x can take a look at the part # stamped on the rubber collar of the filter (see attached pic)?
I was looking for replacement MST filters and it seems like the suggested replacements have a "MF76" stamped on the filter (filter on the left), but the ones that came with my intake are stamped "MF89" (filter on the right). There's a table/pic floating around that seems to have come from MST that says that the MF76's are the correct ones, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The MF76's don't seem to fit properly...unless they just need to REALLY be muscled on. And they feel like they're oiled, but I don't remember the ones that came with the kit being oiled. Just trying to figure out what's off here... Thanks in advance! |

I had an MST. Yes, they were oiled at the factory.

You might get a good guess looking at the MST part numbers. From your picture our original "89" may be an 89130, and now they can only get a "76" in 130 (the 76130) part. The only replacements in "89" seem to be 115 or 145 (89115 or 89145).
And the red oil is important to have. It increases the filtration of the cotton or gauze to catch more particles.

Turns out my OCD came in handy. I kept everything from the MST kit including the individual plastic bags that things were packaged in. The cat # of the intake definitely is BW-M3401 for 2014+ BMW M2/M3/M4 S55 engine. The cat # of the filters (labeled on the shipping bags) is 89-115 The instructions for cleaning the filters ("Dry Air Filter Cleaning Instructions") just say spray with cleaner, rinse and shake off excess water and allow to dry naturally or with compressed air (attached). Guess they changed something at some point? Many thanks for helping solve the mystery. I really do appreciate it! |

This is great info. Maybe send an email to MST letting them know you've found an error on their website. The larger filters certainly "fit right".
For cleaning I researched and all of the "red oil" cleaning kit components seem to be the same. There's an alkali cleaner/wash and the red filter oil. The only real difference is pump or spray bottles (I like pump for the oil) so I found a K&N kit on AZon for cheap. Worked great on my MSTs and still works great on my BMCs.

I have had my MST intake for about a year and want to clean the filters. Are the s55 mst filters dry or do I need to reoil? If I do reoil do I use the cotton KN oil or the synthetic?

You'll probably be OK with keeping them dry, but it's best to re-oil them as that's how they come from the manufacturer.

I'm unfamiliar with the different K&N oils, but any intake oil should be ok.

Yes, you should oil your filters after cleaning because the oil holds onto dirt. If you run them dry then dirt gets through easier. I learned that from Blackstone oil reports. After using K&N cleaner and washing my filters in hot water I put them in the washer to spin dry, then out in the sun (or over a heater vent). Oil them real good, I do two full coats. Then let them dry good, so the oil gets sticky.
