First I could not care less if someone made that kind of statement. Obviously it would prove they know nothing about cars and they would not see the point of an M3/M4 anyway.
Second, I think the color has a lot to do with it. Never got that comment with YMB during the 13 months that I owned my 2016 M3. Loved that car. I just bought a white M4 but it is a GTS so I do not think I am likely to ever get compared to a 320. I will let you know if it happens for sure... |

I don't hold it against them. People are busy and have other hobbies/interests and generally aren't car enthusiasts, so it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is when folks think the M4 is a higher model car over the M3, lol.

340i and Mercedes Comparison - F80
One of my personal favorites is my daughter's boyfriend indicating his 340i is comparable to my F80. I mean I agree, it is comparable it is a 3 series after all, but they are two very different cars in my humble opinion. He was very proud that he kept up with me that one time we left a stop light at the same time on a busy road. I was in Efficient mode, all the way. He has also lowered his car and placed a Performance Exhaust. He thinks in the interest of science we need to run against each other. I personally believe the performance numbers are enough to know, but if he wants to see how bat shit crazy I am, then so be it.
My second favorite is one of the Engineering supervisors in my office will be passive aggressive about BMW. He went on the other day about looking into buying a used car and looking into a Mercedes E series, and that he has been told not to buy a BMW based on having to fix and cost of fixing. He likes mentioning this when others are around. I guess it is a reaffirmation to them I paid too much for my car. I just think in my head they have not driven the car and they simply do not know or realize what they do.

First of all, most people don't really know cars. I was driving the car I bought for my Ex GF for a while and noticed this frequently. It was a 2008 MB CLS550 Sport which was debadged, lowered with ELM, a few other cosmetics and running 20x9 & 20x11. I always kept it clean and had paint correction performed every year. Most people who approached me thought it was a brand new MB that they just hadn't seen yet. These were not car savvy people but people who were drawn by shiny paint and big deep wheels.
My MW F80 has tasteful cosmetic mods from IND, HRE and Status Gruppe and most normal people comment on my cool or fancy 3 series or BMW. Normal people that drive a 3 series including a lot of girls will ask me why it looks different than their 3XX. It doesn't bother me. F80s, F82s and F83s are pretty common in my area. Some mornings I literally count them when I'm walking my dog during morning commute. They are fun cars but they aren't exotic or anything that you should educate people on if they don't know. |

TBH I was a bit surprised too. I never really noticed them until I got mine. The funny thing is that I did notice the guy in the 435 with every exterior M Performance piece known to man who was constantly revving and chirping tires at the stop signs. I guess because all of the M drivers keep it cool.

I understand why it bothers you that people sometimes confuse your car with one that costs half as much and doesn't provide anywhere near the same level of performance.
But, regardless of whether or not you should feel this way, or whether you want people to know that the M3 is different from a standard 3 on whatever metric, you're going to continue encountering people that don't know/care/are confused. You'll likely be less bothered by it all if you accept this reality. |

Coming from a 340i... they are NOT comparable. And you should take him up on his offer.

They do kind of look alike to the untrained eye.
Just use some of the common car forum phrases to explain the difference... "But this (the M) is a very different animal." or "This one is on a whole 'nother level." They'll start to understand. |

Like it or not the M3 is very similar looking to the 3 Series as the M4 is similar looking to the 4 Series.
This is not exclusive to BMW. A base Porsche Cayenne is $59,000 and a fully optioned Cayenne Turbo S can have an MSRP of over $200,000. If the two were parked next to each other most people (including me) would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

What looks the same from a cursory glance can be miles apart on price, performance and prestige on closer inspection. But if you don't care or know the difference, you don't care or know the difference... I have to ask, why do you care?

Had this happen to me once at the chiropractors office. One of the trainer girls says "hey I have the same car as you!" / Me: "Really? What is it?" / Girl: "A 328i!!" / Me: "No, no you don't..."
