I do the opposite, when people ask me what I drive, I say oh it's a 2 series.
I don't go into the details of trying to explain what an M235 is. When I had the E46 M3, I would just say I drive a 3 series. Why do you need validation and jealousy from random strangers? |

Many car people don't know the difference unless they are Porsche people because they don't know what a 997 or 991 are. They know what a 911 is. Just like non-BMW people have no idea what an E21 is.

I can see how they might confuse a E21 with an E30, but at least the E46 looks drastically different than a E21. A 2005 Carrera doesn't look that much different to the untrained eye than a 2016 Carrera and they are only one generation apart!

You missed my point. I was saying that they don't have a clue what an E21 is or an E46, but they might know what a 320i is or a 330i. Many people don't know the nomenclature of non-model numbers such as E30 or F82 or E46 or 997 or 996 or 991. Those numbers are foreign to non-enthusiasts.

No I get it and I agree. I'm just saying they can't tell between an old 911 and a new 911. Didn't mean to get stuck on the model codes.

Stealth is something I welcome for my DD and what has always attracted me to M sedans. My E39 M5 is even a better Q-car than the F80, but the latter does pretty well in Mineral Grey.

Maybe I'm a shallow asshole but it would annoy me. It's like busting my ass at the gym for years to be told you look like fat guy who never worked out his entire life. Not that I need people to know I spent 80k on a car but I want them to know I have better taste, lol
Maybe I'm insecure, but at least I'm Honest, lol. I wouldn't be angry, but I would definitely mumble a "what the F____" under my breath Last edited by JoeyBananas; 01-14-2017 at 07:02 AM.. |

I have been a member for 5 years, but have not been to a single event. I know, it's terrible. But when pressed between a BMW CCA event and family functions/friends, I always chose the latter. |

This type of elitist statement is what reinforces the stereotype. It is exactly the type of thinking that makes those outside of the BMW community think We ARE "douches'! Of course, "We" are on the "same level"! It's our cars that may be different, but like it or not, our ("F8x") M"'s are based off of "3 and 4 Series" architecture. Any non-(BMW) car person will easily confuse our cars' for a "3" or "4" series, without question. Yes. Our cars are more expensive and there are some of those who can afford (Lease/Finance/Buy) to acquire them because they have more money available for any number of reasons/sources. That's it, but that, in and of itself, does not qualify us or even gives us the right to "educate" others. These cars can be considered luxury items. We buy these cars because we have reached an economic level that lets us satisfy our egos. We buy what we like, not necessarily what we need. Cheers! I've been driving BMWs since 1971 when folks told me that they thought BMW stood for "British Motor Works" & wondered if it was a diesel. I really don't give a shit what others think of my cars or if they're confused about them.

My buddy got a 428i and said he regretted not getting the M sport package which he thought turned his car into the M4.
To be honest though they kinda do look similar in this generation for whatever reason.. m sport 4 series vs m4 |

I was at the McDonald's drive thru the other day and as I pull up to the first window the cashier says, "Nice car, I have the same one except mine has 4 doors" so I reply, "oh, so you have an M3" and he says, "well... it's a little different. I have a 5 series. It's a 530i"
