Are you pulling the engine on account of the metal particles?

If a mechanic is telling you to pull the engine for that reason than go find another one and if it's your idea to do this then I suggest find a mechanic
You can access all of that while your engine is still in.
Unless you got more reasons why to remove your engine don't wast your time and money.
Good luck

If you believe it's the rod bearings, then why not visually inspect them by dropping the oil pan?

Care to share more about the engine's mods and history?

Well im also wanting to do crank hub, bigger turbos, trans clutches and whatnot. Was thinking having engine out would be easier. Havent talked to my technician yet..

Ok
Definitely check what those shavings are before you drop money on all these upgrades

Interested here too. Every single oil change I'm getting excessive copper flake. Stock, never tuned, CPO car from BMW.

In attachment are photos of oil from my M4, 80 000km on clock, oil change interval 5 000km, car is driven hard I am using thicker oil 5w-40 Motul.

I wonder if small flakes are rod bearing, they are magnetic.

If you look at my post here: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=28356537 I have videos and description of a noise that I was having. long story short, there was quite a bit of metal debris in the oil filter and a bit of noise at cold start (that eventually went away after warming up). Shop's recommendation was an engine replacement as they were very confident that the metal was from the rod bearings. Thankfully I had extended warranty that covered everything except my $300 deductible.
