The Supra basically is an ///M BMW. At your age I’d buy one new with a full warranty as opposed to an 18 M4 which at best only has a few months of warranty left.

Came from a Jetta to the M3. So I understand the thought of not being able to control the power the car puts down. You just have to resist the urge from putting it in Sport Plus and trying to show off, that's where most mistakes are made lol

You seem significantly more mature and sophisticated than I was at 18. I definitely wouldn't have had the self control to avoid racing anyone that would engage if had access to 400-500 HP at 18, or even 21. I recall a story about kids in an M5 on John Travolta's air strip and thinking that would've been me.

Be smart and you'll be fine. One of the traits I love about my car is the ability drive it like a grocery getter with the kids and wife, and transform it into a beast when in the mood.

Good luck!

The m3/m4 is a completely safe, driveable, "high hp", rwd vehicle and people on the forum will tell you it's a screeching umtameable rocket. You don't even need to keep the traction control on if you don't drive like an idiot. Have a light foot and open eyes. Stay up on your maintenance. You'll be ok.

And congratulations.

I came from a Jetta as well at 23 years old ah.

I put my M4 lightly into a wall in -3 degree weather on shitty summer tires driving beyond my limits and completely fucked up, luckily not a lot of damage car was fixed and insurance stayed the same.

To OP —- be careful, start off with making sure you have proper tires as others have stated, keep TC on, learn throttle modulation and don't lift off oversteer..

If you can afford an M4 you need to take your child to Bmw driving school so he can learn how to properly drive his car. I can tell you right now the competition puts down 450 hp to the rear wheels and it doesn't take much to go sideways. A lot of young people have killed them selves almost in car accidents from going sideways or crash the car not understanding the amount of power this car has an amount of torque at this car has my suggestion spend two or $3000 and go to Bmw driving school.

Honestly think it's a non-issue. How someone drives is totally based on their personality and risk-tolerance. Wouldn't say the M4 is any more dangerous that a young kid with a modded honda civic.

If this is your first time owning/driving a car, maybe take it easy for the first couple drives to get used to it. The power and DCT can be a little touchy-feely as you get acquainted with it. Only word of advice is the car is definitely wider/bigger than normal sedans -- you'll feel it with the turn radius on tight U-turns and generally parking in places that have tighter spaces; just be more careful and cautious with that and you'll be good. enjoy the car!

+1 I have an 18 M3 Comp... just the other day, first time putting it in sports plus and it hit me... throttle control is a must with the amount of torque and RWD in this car. Even Porsche knows to put AWD in their turbos and thats back in the late 90's that has over 400+hp... and thats with all that weight in the back.

My kid turned 18 a few months ago... will I let him drive the M3, tough call. Yes, he's mature kid... BUT lacks experience. He doesn't know car behavior at speeds or how to listen to the butt dyno or even how quickly shit can go wrong... it boils down to seat time in this car. Its way to easy to light this car up. Maybe, Ill let him drive in day time only, in this case he can see the potholes better.

I recently turned 18 and got a very nice scholarship to a college. As a result, I was given the opportunity to get an F82 2018 M4 that's arriving within a week from now. I have been driving for about a year now but it was in my mom's AWD Q5. I am wondering if I --a new but decent driver-- can control the power of the F82 as long as I don't act like a complete maniac. I should also mention, I am taking a track course from a European driving instructor I have had in the past while working towards my normal license so I will get a better understanding of how to control this car. I don't plan on flooring or drifting the car anytime soon as the main focus right now is getting some of the ladies while looking cool in the school parking lot. Your input on the subject would be very much appreciated!
If you are getting instruction on the track you are already 5 steps ahead of every other young driver out on the street. Know that this car CAN AND WILL KILL YOU AND/OR OTHER PEOPLE if you do not respect:

...that the public roads are not your playground
...that the car is more capable than you are, but will constantly try and kill you if you do something stupid
...the laws of physics
...traffic laws and regulations (bend, but don't break)
...that no one's life is worth showing off
...that you impress no one but mouth breathing idiots by hooning on a public road
...that you are slower than a better driver in a slower car

Here is an EXPERIENCED driver almost dying on the track:

Hey OP! I just came back to correct my wording. I meant "will tell you", not what it previously said, which was "act like". I realized that came off as me talking about you. I applaud your effort to be sure you're gonna be safe. I just meant there's a lot of people on the forum who pretend an m can't be driven normally for some reason. Like I said, have a light foot and be aware. You'll have a blast. Best cars ever to me.

If it were me at 18 again, to be honest, I would be contributing to the used m3/m4 parts market. I wish the best for you and hope you will be able to resist the urge to drive it like a goon, but then again, why drive an m car if not to have some fun. Congrats on the scholarship, they don’t just hand those out. So good work man.
Something to consider, you might have more fun buying a slower car and making it faster and enjoying all that comes with making friends in the car modifying circles, rather than just buying a fast car, leaving it stock and driving it slow.

Preciate it! The plan is whenever i get comfortable in this car I can start merking with it. And eventually, 2-3 years later i would consider mods. But i do plan on adding cosmetic mods as soon as i get the car like a carbon ducktail

OP has gotten a lot of great advice here.

I will elaborate on 2 things more

1. traction control,I’d recommend to not even use MDM mode until you’re very comfortable.

2. Colder/cooler weather can greatly impact tire traction. So outside temps below 65 IMO are cause for even more caution when playing around in turns.

Glad to see all the positive comments here, sometimes being a young guy with a nice car brings a lot of unwanted attention. I have been driving BMW's since I was 15 (albeit, a clapped 200k mi E46 323i lol) but now at 23 I have a 7xx hp M6. Like everyone else said, keep that traction control on, don't even touch MDM, get the stickiest tires you can (Michelin Pilot Sport 4S) and be modest.

Oh, and, as far as the ladies? I find that cars like these attract way more guys than girls, LOL!

M cars attract more guys than girls or maybe I'm just unattractive. Likely both!

Learned that day one showing off my then new to me M3 to a friend in the rain with MDM on.

Drag race turned into a drift show instead.

The upcoming GR86, Z, or Civic Type-R are what I would get if I were 18 today.
