MPSS or 4S?
It's time for me to replace the tires on my 2018 bmw M3 competition and I can still get the MPSS tires 265/30/20 and 285/30/20.
Two questions: 1. What's the best tire size to fit on my stock 20inch competition wheels? Can I go bigger or will that cause issues? 2. Would you get the same MPSS or change to the 4S?

Definitely make the switch to 4S…especially for the same or similar money. I switched from MPSS to 4S on a different car and loved the 4S. Can’t wait to replace the MPSS currently on my M4 to 4S’s.

Go for the 4s, much better traction, love them. I went 275 front and 295 rear with no issues but I have an M4 and I hear that the M3 might have a front clearance issue with the 275.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. It's only about $100 more overall. What if I leave 265 but go 295 rear?

I'm going with 265/30/20 and 295/30/20, with the 20 inch 666 wheels, non carbon ceramics. Good choice?

The 4s are heavier than the PSS though. I have the 4s and they are great, but Im not sure they are better thsn the PSS in dry weather. Wet is a different story.

Heavier, yes. Better, yes. I could not put full power down until I was in third on the PSS. On the 4S I can in second. These grip in the wet like the PSS do in the dry.

So you think I'll have better traction with the 4s? I live in SoCal and it's never wet...

The biggest difference is people go from an old haggard set of PSS to brand new PS4S. Going to a new set of PSS would feel just as impressive to 99% of people. |

Considering I have had multiple sets of PSS and 4S I too have experience with both. Yes a new set feels better than an old set but an old generation of tire does not out perform newer generations of tires. The difference between not full power in second with PSS to full power with 4S in second makes a hard argument that there is more grip. At 10k miles on the 4S I still can get full power in second. This is with an E30 tune as well.

I would agree with most statements on the 4S. Im on my 2nd set (I go through a set each year), running 275/295, and they just look beefier, and give the look as if you have spacers. Dry traction is superior over stock in both wet and dry, but let me tell you that I was most impressed with the performance in wet conditions... not like I want to drive under WOT in such conditions... the traction on wet roads is "out of control!!"

I made the switch from MPSS to MP4S (stock ZCP size) recently, and I would recommend the 4S. My first impression was that the 4S lacked the super quick steering response of the MPSS. But the improved dry/wet traction, stability, and ride comfort makes the 4S the better overall choice for me.

I've tracked both MPSS and MPS4S on both my old and current F80. The MPS4S outperformed the MPSS in all aspects. Better cornering, braking, wet handling, and less wear. Fittingly, since the 4S is the newer tire with newer technology. Frankly I'm not sure why the SS is still around. Probably because it has such a huge following and the profit margin is probably larger on the older tire.
BTW I burned through my front MPSS's in 6k miles with 4-5 track days. The shoulders were gone. The MPS4S has beefier shoulders for better grip and less wear.

Nice! I was worried about 275 on my M3, so I stayed with 265 but went with 295 rears.
