Only thing I could think is that it would shut the engine off while coasting... Only other way to not fire injectors. But if the engine is idling, injectors have to fire. If the momentum of the car is keeping the engine spinning the injectors don't fire.

I believe coasting in neutral is an infraction in many states in the US too so this seems like a strange feature.

You just pop the gear lever out without the clutch? Doesn't seem like it's worth the very minimal wear on the clutch.

That's the craziest thing I have ever heard, shifting without depressing clutch

You've never no-clutch straight shifted at the right RPMs? I have done it a few times in some past cars and it's a pretty cool feeling when you do it right. Most times I found it by accident. Is there more wear? Sure. Is it crazy, not really unless you are grinding gears to do it.

Seems like you either have to know exactly what RPM to do it at or hold slight pressure on the gearstick and let it pop out. The former seems like a lot of work and the latter seems like it'll wear syncros.

I am fairly certain leaving it in neutral does not conserve fuel. On the contrary, leaving it in gear and using engine breaking conserves fuel as well as brakes.

I second this thought. Even sitting at the light I would have the car in gear, clutch in. It didn't happen often, but a couple of times it saved me from an accident. (I've driven manuals for almost 25 years).

I thought doing this wears out the throw out bearing.

Yes its crazy and stupid , you are driving a manual and not an automatic , so get used to using the clutch all the time

Once you get the hang of it it is quite easy to shift an MT without using the clutch.

You are right, you can wear out the bearing. I've never had a bearing go before a clutch though, so I've never concerned myself with it. But you are right.

If you want to shift without a clutch, buy a dct? Takes out the timing and guesswork of RPM matching and the possibility of damaging your transmission. Unless you a lot of money to burn, steer clear of shifting w/o clutch. Your synchros thank you.

I was referring to just shifting it out of gear into neutral when arriving to a stop. There's a point where the car reaches idle and the gear will smoothly disengage. It's pleasant imo to do and over the life of the car may make the throw out bearing last longer.

I'll also play with shifting without a clutch but only in rental cars for fun. The risk of grinding a gear in the M3 isn't worth it.

Not to throw the thread off topic, but I just purchased a manual M3 and I have never driven a manual (hoping it arrives early next week as it arrived at VPC yesterday). Did I make a mistake or is an M3 an ok car to learn on? My SA was kind enough to offer lessons during delivery, but I am a bit worried...

You're brave. Watch a lot of YouTube videos. Rent a manual if you can. The auto rev feature will help you a lot. Oh yea get Ultimate Care for that free clutch replacement.
