Yes, I get it, the front end looks better without a plate on some cars, especially M3's. That's why I don't have one, despite being required in IL.

I think that all the hide-away plates and the tow hook solutions are not very savvy. Either install the plate on a plate holder in the middle of the bumper the way the manufacturer intended OR don't install it at all and deal with the tickets.

Why go throught the hassle of other alternatives?

Every time I see a BMW with a tow hook plate, I can't help but laugh and notice how ghetto and pathetic it looks. Someone is willing to ruin the entire front end look for the sake of not having to drill two tiny holes in the bumper. Congratulations.

Most people who do this are all about the "Euro" look. The irony being that in Europe every single M3 has a front license plate. It's required and nobody (and I emphasize nobody) has a problem with it. They don't use tow hook solutions either.
1000% agree. The front plate 'solutions' all look ridiculous, IMO. I'm not running a front plate on the 1M at the moment....but if I do I will mount it in the center, euro style....with some sort of adhesive solution (not drilling) as they do in Europe as well.

Never put my front plates on. Got pulled 2x in 2 weeks for other....ummm...infractions....

Both times my story of..."but the dealer didn't put the plates on and look...there aren't even holes for me to do it!".....

Did not fly and added revenue was added to my rapidly increasing community contribution.

Still roll the dice every day

I think they are great if it's a classic and you go to car shows. No way I am driving around San Diego with no plate. My I luck get pulled over after having two Sculpin IPA's with dinner.

Basically lowering the plate before a pullover is useless, no?
It isn't stupid. Here is why. I was in a RS5 with this hidden plate. Pulled up to a parking meter in LA while I saw a meter maid guy smile as I drove the RS5 and parked about 2 cars in front of him. Then I realized the plate wasn't up. So switched up the plate, parked the car. Went into a coffee shop next to the parking spot. Saw the meter man walk up to the front of the car....looking perplexed..and walked off. That is just one instance when that happened...it pays for itself!

The thing is, the european plates are shaped differently and the cars front end is designed for them. US front plates just don't seem to fit the car properly.

I'll take my chances with tickets, I've gotten a few of them, I don't mind the risk. screw the hide-aways and hook mounts.

Didn't say it was stupid, said the cop isn't going to be stupid. I said its useless, but in your case I stand corrected. Nice catch!

I would totally get it hidden. I would always have it up however. But when I want to park at a car show I can just stow it away. Plus it avoids drilling holes that are visible on the front end.

I would not get it however for the sole purpose of only having it up when a cop is around or something. I would do the opposite and have it up all the time, except for when I wanted to show off a clean look.

Yeah but as demonstrated, being able to say "oops, forgot to put it back up" might be a legitimate thing that helps someone out. Having alternate methods aren't useless, there's just still a risk and people need to be ok with that.

Don't take this too serious, but "oops, sorry judge I forgot to put it back down" might not get you as far as you think. They have seen it and heard it all I'm afraid.

I do agree with leaving it up all the time, and lowering it for track day or a car show. Plus no drill holes.

Or just run her naked, and take your chances!

I can see the point. I hate drilling into the body for any reason, especially one that's mandated by an overzealous state government. When I'm ready for my next M3, I want to leave this one in idyllic condition for its next owner . So, fighting the power and not destroying something beautiful because some idiot in Sacramento is on a power trip.

I am concerned, though, about license plate thieves with these tow hook solutions. The first months that we moved to the Bay, some asshole made off with my girlfriend's front plate. Surely if all they had to do was turn one 10mm a few times, or quick release a mount, that plate would be gone in a second. I'd probably opt for the roboplate and just leave it out full time, simply because it's the one that probably secures the plate best.

uhh....if they want to steal a plate....it's not exactly hard to just unscrew 4 screws to steal it either!

I'm interested in buying this gadget, got a couple of questions for you:
1. How was the installation, mostly the electrical, no computer errors?
2. Did you had to cut the plastic mesh below where the plate hides? It seems on the video that the plate hides deep into it
3. How long have you been using it?
4. You bought it from oneightynyc.com?
