Thinking of selling my 911 991 S for an M4 6MT....
What do you think? I have had the 2013 991 C2S for 6 months now, great car. But, it isn't very practical, and I miss my old E92 M3, and all the stuff I could put in there (I once put 2 complete bicycles w/wheels into the trunk, and the rest of the stuff needed for a week long training camp into the back seat, no roof rack needed). The 911 just isn't practical w/o a roof rack (I travel everywhere with my bike) and I don't end up driving it much. Plus, the PDK....it isn't a 6MT. Kids fit in the back OK, but not much else does: the M4 is a large car and more practical.
For those who have driven both, what were your thoughts? A local dealer has a 6MT F82 they are looking to move, I basically pocket $16k out of the trade. My C2S is fully loaded with every performance option. The M4 is going to be used, so no comp pack, probably needs coilovers and upgraded exhaust to even sound and handle somewhat comparably to the 911. One thing I do wonder: M3 and M4's are dropping in value like a rock. 911's hold value pretty well once they are a few years old, or so the rumor goes. Even though the car is cheaper, am I actually better off keeping the 911 from a value perspective? Most indications favor modern 911's for reliability. Looks: Porsche or F82? I see way more 911's than I see M3 or M4's (I have seen all of 1 M3 and 1 M4 F80 gen in my town. In comparison, I see probably 3 to 6 911 991 generation each week here. Probably because people see the M3/M4 as a daily driver and we get a lot of snow, while people see the 911 as a summer car and they all have winter vehicles). So, I typically notice an M car more, just as it is much more rare, 911's maybe aren't as stunning to me, especially as there is one in my garage. Then again, maybe this is all "grass is greener thought", and somebody needs to knock me aside the head! |

I would keep 911. I'm getting M3 because of kids and budget, but I realize it will drop in value much more than 2-3yo p-car.
In our area I see more Teslas then anything. 911 all over place on nice days. Have seen M3 twice in 3 month |

I just sold my 991 / Golf R and went to a F80 only lineup. I loved my 991S, but it is sorta impracticable and doesn't give you the push in power the F80 does.. on the flipside, the 991 sounds A LOT better and its noticeably lighter, although IMO the limits are very similar. For ONE car, i enjoy my F80 more. If i had the cash, id run a 991.2 / F80.

Happiness Trumps Value. The 991.1 lacks the torque. After test driving the 4S 2013 PDK, I decided to go with the M4 M/T. I have more use with the M4 and I honestly enjoy driving it more.. everywhere. As of Value? Who cares. The 911s biggest value is that they all have low mileage because no one drives them. As for the M3/M4 dropping like a rock.. who says? It's rated best resale value in its segment.

You must be confused about resale value. M3s holding value very well. If your 911 is fully loaded, getting anything close to it back after options is a dream.

I did the reverse. Went from a F80 to a 997.2 GT3.
But I have a 4door crew cab Tacoma for kiddie duties and misc. hauling. When I purchased the F80, I used practicality as a reason, but in my 18months of ownership, I used its cargo/passenger space only a handful of times. While the F80 is still top 3 best cars I've ever driven, I felt that driving dynamics and overall fun was higher in the P-car. Since this is your sole vehicle, I think the switch makes sense.

I just sold my e92 to pick up a used 991 GTS but I also have a second vehicle I can use as a daily and for hauling people and things. If this is your only vehicle, then you can't go wrong with the M. I don't think I could do the 911 if it were my only car.

F8x have been holding their value great, as have previous M3s. I think you are confusing Porsche's driven 3,000-5,000 miles a year, garage kept/immaculate condition vehicles with M vehicles driven 10,000-20,000 miles a year driven in more weather and beat up a little bit more. There are far more of both on the market that tends to confuse peoples perception of resale value.

Went from a 911 to an M3 and never went back. Performance close enough to make little difference plus I prefer the Q-car appeal. That said, spend a bit more and you'll find the GT3 is a car that no M3 can touch.
Re resale the F80, like M3s before it, holds value really well. M5 is where you lose your pants.... |

My point is that I THINK I may have realized that for me I need to move away from buying the next best thing, and just come up with a plan to deliberately buy cool depreciated cars that I can enjoy for a year and then flip. P.s. The guy I bought the e39 m5 from was overall decent but hid/didn't disclose/didn't know about a few issues. However, when he delivered it to me with SIX (6!) miles worth of fuel left in the tank and then I had to stop at a gas station and he didn't at least offer $10-20 worth of fuel, that does not inspire confidence in the expensive german automobile you are purchasing

I went from a 2015 991 GT3 to a 2017 M4 comp pacakge. Have not looked back a single day. The car is more fun, attracts less attention, and gives me the giggles every time I drive it. the porsche was just too serious of a car for me.
I love my M4, plus it's so tunable so you never get bored of it. |

You can be that guy that drops $225k on a 993 turbo instead of a 991RS EDIT: OP, I have been reading speculation that 991.1 will suddenly become worth more because no turbos, so maybe you should wait and see how values change. |

I went from two F80 M3s to a Camaro SS (for 2 months) to an Audi S3 (for 2 months) and now looking at either a 2014 C2S ($82k asking price) or a new M2 for something different than than the M3. difficult decision but the good news is: there's no bad choice. the bad news? there's no perfect choice and you'll probably be shopping again in a couple years (if you can make it that long).
enjoy the journey!
