Is there a reference code for the letter?

It's only being sent to USA customers, but would be good to have a reference to quote at non-US dealers for them to lookup...

Same leak on my 2017 F83.

Same leak from just in front of driver-side rear tire immediately following fulling the gas tank. The concerning part is that there was no obvious sign that there was a leak. I did smell gas, but I just assumed that I had gotten it on my fingers while touching something at the pump.

For those who have not experienced this issue, if you smell any gas after a fill-up, take a quick look under the car where described.

The issue is probably limited to a subset of VINs, hence I never got the letter. Mine is a 2018, built in July 2017; US spec. Owned since new.

On this page there are 2015-2018 cars, at least 1 F80, F82 and F83, so its not limited to any particular variant or MY. There is clearly a problem. I can only assume that it is dependent on a variable that we don't know and will likely never figure out...kind of like the crank hub issue (not to bring that up).

Got the "heavy" gas smell lately every time when filling up the tank. My 2016 M3 F80 is right now at the dealership for repair under the limited emission warranty, due to the fuel tank leak.

From what the dealership told me, the check engine light was triggered at least once by the tank pressure sensor, IIRC.

The fuel tank is used for so many different vehicles. Is the leaking issue specific to F8X?

I got this exact issue 2018 f80 44k miles

the dealership is refusing to service my car under this extended emissions warranty. Even though I have shared this document.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...12779-9999.pdf

they are claiming the fuel tank does not fall under this extended warranty. What do you all think I should do? thanks for the discussions. The warranty manager at the dealerships is claiming this issue is not covered. any advice?

f80bayarea go to a different dealership or pressure the manager or talk to a higher up. It’s covered under emissions and it’s their responsibility to fix it.

Forgot to update lol. I was able to get the car covered under warranty after telling the BMW rep I was not going with the dealership to do the repairs.

They negotiated with me to get the job done for $2500 and I said sure.
When I went to pick up my car after the repairs I ending up not paying the $2500.

The paper work they gave me ended up saying it was covered under warranty.

I have a 2018 M4 with the leak. I am being told by the dealer that the warranty extension is by VIN # and that my car is not included.

Yesterday I filled up my 2018 F80 and when I pulled into my garage the smell of gas was evident. This morning the smell was overpowering and I didn't see any gas on the floor.

I guess it's a new tank gas tank for me.

Are you in CA ? Was the letter sent to you or did you just go in showing a copy of it ?

I just went through this with my 2018 F80. BMW USA didn't do a thing in regards to goodwill. Fortunately my 3rd party warranty covered the tank replacement at a cost of $3300.

It really shouldn't matter what year F series this happens too. It's unacceptable for a gas to leak on a car that hasn't had any impact to the rear end.

Good luck.

For those that may not have seen or recieved the notice here is a pic. If your VIN is in the range it should be covered:

I’m having the same exact issue except no MIL/CEL and did not receive the letter. Heavy fuel smell immediately after filling up.

Going to take my vehicle in tomorrow. Hoping I don’t get turned away. I have a 2015 f80 with 130k miles. How was your experience at your dealer ?

So I had a similar issue although I don't know if it's related. I have a 2018 M3 comp with very low miles. I got a CEL for 190302 : Diagnostic module for tank leaks (NVLD), fuel tank ventilation system, micro-leak: Leakage larger than 0.5 mm .

I cleared it and it came back after a week or so. Today I went to fill gas and did not overfill. Yet when I went to get into my car, I saw gas pouring out the bottom of the car near the back left door and wheel area.

I parked it in a safe spot till it stopped pouring out then left.

Do you guys think this could be related to the fuel tank issue or the other issue related to the vent sensor?

Any chance I can get this covered under emissions if it's either issue. I saw this post but when I tried to look up a TSB/ SIB on the NHTSA site or google, I couldn't find anything about 2018 M3s being covered. https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1392644

Do you think this is covered by BMW/federal emissions? If not, any guides on how to fix it?

Thanks for your help!

Regardless take it to the dealer and tell them what happen they will charge you for a diagnosis but trust me you want to take it in as soon as possibly you shouldn’t be driving it if it’s spilling out gas like that .

Go on the website I provided and input your vin. See what pops up .

I'm very thankful, BMW covered it under the extended federal emissions warranty. They replaced the fuel tank and it seems to be fixed. If you have the leaking fuel tank issue, make sure you ask them to cover it under federal emissions.
