F8X Weights & Weight Reduction Data - Ongoing List

I figured it might be useful to get an official weight thread going (since I will be doing it in a spreadsheet for myself anyways...). I picked up a set of Intercomp corner scales (1500b capacity per pad) that I have been wanting for quite some time. I usually like to get a baseline weight before I get started modding as I like to keep everything tracked on a spreadsheet with reducing weight in mind for every part I choose (I weight parts on a calibrated 75lb postage scale). I like the challenge of saving weight without sacrificing too much for daily driving. For some people maybe it is for the track, for me I like to improve my braking, acceleration, and fuel economy for as little $$ as possible. Doesn't matter how minuscule each item I save weight on, I enjoy the challenge.

I have two F80s at my immediate disposal, but if I can have some of the other local metro-Atlanta folks swing by I could get even more data about the cars' weights with various options as well as get some F82 and F83 on the scales. But for now this is a start.

If you have any weights you'd like to add that have been weighed on a package or postal scale for parts that I haven't mentioned, please respond and I'll add them. I just ask that we avoid the bathroom scales... I will be adding more weights myself as I have time.

Stock Curb Weights (100% full tank of 93oct unless specified, as weighed on Intercomp corner scales as noted ACTUAL):
3446 lbs = F80, 6MT, 18s, Extended Leather, Carbon Roof, NO FUEL (CALC'd w/ part weights)
3454 lbs = F80, 6MT, 19s, Extended Leather, Carbon Roof, NO FUEL (ACTUAL)
3544 lbs = F80, 6MT, 18s, Extended Leather, Carbon Roof (CALC'd w/ part weights)
3552 lbs = F80, 6MT, 19s, Extended Leather, Carbon Roof (ACTUAL)
3593 lbs = F80, 6MT, 18s, Extended Leather, Sunroof (ACTUAL)
3601 lbs = F80, 6MT, 19s, Extended Leather, Sunroof (CALC'd w/ part weights)

Interesting info about the 18" vs 19" wheels/tires where the 18" fronts are heavier while the 19" rear are heavier.

I might need to go back and re-weigh them. I have a second postage scale so I may double check on that. I checked the weights PSI got from their silver 19s and the rears are similar but the fronts are off by a few lbs.

Thanks for a really helpful thread. I like it when everything is done scientifically!

Surprising how much weight you can get out by removing non essential stuff such as manual, floor mats, trunk bits and pieces etc.

Interesting, the difference between these and yours.

EDIT: Just noticed the CCW Classics on your NSX, there.

I'll probably be going LM-20 again on the F80.

Yeah, that does have me wondering. I noted that earlier.

I've got another scale of the same make and a third scale that I may do a quick test on to see if I see the same relationship between the 18s/19s.

Only meaningful discrepancy is with the front 19" IMO.

EAS - Accel Junky
18F: 44.00 - 44.20
18R: 48.25 - 48.16
19F: 45.90 - 43.46
19R: 49.85 - 49.68

Might want to double check that one only

I reweighed and got 46.48lbs on the front 19" via a couple of different scales including my original scale. I'm going to update that in my original post. Doesn't explain why all the rest of mine are lower weight than their measurement...but hey.

Not all were lighter, your 18" front was heavier. But overall, 1~3oz difference is nothing .

^^ Thanks! Weight threads are one of my favorites.

So, I thought I would get clever tonight and see what an oh-shit-handle delete would save. Considering there are 4 handles in the sedan and they are at the very top of the car I figured it was a good place to delete weight. One...I don't use mine at all and two my wife was using the door grab handle to hang on at the Nurburgring and any other time I warn her "hold on to your shorts". So I figure they really are not needed.

Here's the thing though... BMW has deleted the screw system holding them in. Also, the plastic handles appear to be hollow with some substructure making them amazingly light.

With caps, the handles only weigh 0.21 lbs each. So at best you are saving a little over 3/4 pound from above your head if you factor in the weight of delete plugs (I'm not sure if those are even available).

Still...given delete plugs, it might be worth taking them out since they do nothing for me. In the rear a single hook could be added (perhaps from M4?) for clothes.

Excellent thread!

As you've mentioned above, when looking at component weights one of the incredible realities that emerges is how light BMW has managed to make some pieces, while retaining full functionality.

I look forward to watching the community work together to make these cars as light as possible.

Yes, I'm starting to realize just how hard it is going to be to save weight on this car for no cost. And another thing is that some of the low hanging fruit (like the exhaust and battery) is going to take the car even further towards front weight bias. The car is already a little front heavy (51.5/48.5...not quite 50/50) but I'm thinking losing enough weight in the front to reach 50/50 is going to be quite tough.

Agreed- aluminum uprights and suspension components, polyurethane bumper, etc and weight savings at the front of the car become a tricky proposition.

The radiator support at the front of the car is a bolt-in steel piece of considerable weight. I had thought to build this piece from carbon fiber to retain full rigidity while saving a substantial weight, but considered this part to be of little interest to M owners. This thread is making me reconsider.

True race cars could save substantial weight in several places, but functionality would be lost. Items like the windshield washer system, AC, headlights, and so on could all be removed if the car was a race-only vehicle.
