Good stuff! It seems like the new engine will be lag-free and they concentrated on cooling. All good news.
There was some weird info about the engine in 1M coupe, (which is an M tuned N54), saying it shared the S55 designation. Is that accurate? Might be but it sounds wrong to me. |

So the engine weighs 452 pounds and is 22 pounds lighter than the V8. Interesting facts.

I am curious to what "impulse charging" refers to to. I have seen it quoted more than once, but have not figured out what it implies from a technical perspective. I am still eager to find out what is the trick technology (if any) ///M has used to reduce lag. |

I wish they would have asked if this technology means that the S55 is significantly more responsive than the S63TU which isn't bad but not nearly good enough for the more track oriented M3 IMO. No to say that the M3 is a track car but it's usually more track friendly than the M5.

That's doesn't even add up to 3L. I wonder if we'll ever know the real bore dimensions? Nice read though - thanks for posting. However, after reading it thoroughly, wow, there are a number of glaring errors like "...even though it shares the same S55 designation as the 1M Coupe's..." |

7800 rpms is a wonderful redline/fuel cutoff; I believe that's about what the reprogrammed s54 hit after the initial 8000rpm redline kerfuffle.
What really stuck out to me is that the s55 has 70% more torque at 2000 rpms and 40% more torque at 7500 rpms than the s65. That is: 1. A boatload more torque in daily driving. Combined with a lighter weight this thing should SCOOT at 2000rpms when you wood it. 2. Indicates a really nice kick in the pants when shifting up to the next gear, if you are getting that much additional torque between 5000-6000 rpms compared to where the s65 would be. As many others have said, it's all about area under the curve. And what I'm reading is that there is ALOT more power throughout + several hundred pounds less to power around. Really good stuff all around. |

Shouldn't a 3L I6 weight more than just 20 kg less than a 4L V8???
Looks like most people here are ok with the lack of linear power delivery up top. .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Remove all turbo junk and bore the thick block and you will have a much lighter NA 3l I6. FI comes with extra weight.

Besides the actual quotes from Siegl and Biermann this article is worthless. They show figures that are not confirmed and nothing that we haven't heard before. However, it was still a good read since it;s about the new beast.

Whether it's 84 or 89, both of these statements contradict earlier info about the engine being oversquare.

I read somewhere that they are keeping the throttles open under deceleration to reduce pumping losses to help keep the turbos spooled up but only when its in the sport or sport plus drive modes.I cannot remember where I read this though
