I think exhaust flaps aren´t open in video. Here is one video Porsche´s exhaust sound. Different settings make huge difference. Indeed you can see that all exhaust gas coming from inner pipe.

Funny how all those other clips posted, e92, 991S etc, sound so much better on these same shitty speakers.

At idle/very low revs, the E60 M5 sounds like a diesel. I think that is what he was referring to. Obviously once it gets going it sounds glorious...

Bit embarrassing buying the M 3 /4 and it sounds like a lawnmower. Clearly BMW has done nothing to change the poor exhaust sound from the initial reviews of the car which highlighted this issue.

You don't buy a car like this for it to sound so poor

Totally agree
Good point. Which is why I drove the M5 in anticipation of crappy iPad speakers. And you know what..? It sounds better on the iPad. The real life sound is nothing more than monotone engine revs cluttered with engine farting at all gear changes. Like a previous post says, the car sounds amazing in performance specs and definitely is the part, buts it's like expecting to hear Pavarotti only to be disappointed by getting Dr. Dre.

I'm loving the stance, gorgeous lines under a fantastic lighting... loving both M3 AND M4 (I didn't quite like the exterior of M4 compared to M3 until this video)... loving the lip spoiler on M3 (Didn't notice it before)... loving the evolution of interior and how futuristic it looks... and then the sound clip POOPS a hard diarrhea and shits on everything.

I know, I know, you don't buy an M-car for sound, but in this case, the sound is sub-par even compared to the cars that are way below its class. And of course, this is only my humble opinion.
Humble ?

I'm listening to it on digital output to a velodyne sub, reference speakers and a yamaha receiver. Not a high end system but adequate. I don't care for the sound. Bear in mind though that I drive (until this summer) an E92 M3.

The car should sound good from the factory - it's a performance car. Performance exhaust should be to make a great sounding car even better not just to get it to an acceptable standard.

Can't imagine BMW have not been working on the sound- it might surprise us all

Honestly it's no NA V8, but I think it sounds ok, purposeful. I don't mind it.

It is artificial in that sound is piped in through the speakers, but from what I understand it is the actual engine sound of the vehicle, picked up with microphone(s) or some other type of pickup, and apparently is not synthesized or sampled engine sound unlike other BMWs with active sound. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (does anyone actually know yet?). Not sure if that makes it better for you, but there's that. I don't mind a bit of sound reinforcement to aid in making shift decisions, as long as it's coming from the engine in real time and if it sounds natural.

I've ranted and hated on BMW's Active Sound and now I know why they developed the technology. The exhaust sound is terrible--at least in this clip. I guess Akrapovic will be taking my money yet again when I get my next M3.

On a positive note the cars look well designed and I look forward to driving one--more torque, less weight, more CF. All good except sound.
