DCT owners: Kickdown vs. manually downshift for best rolling takeoff
If you're racing someone from a roll, on a closed course or in Mexico of course, like a 40 (2nd gear) roll, are you more likely to win if you manually downshift into second, then floor it when you both go, or is it better to use the kickdown feature and take off like that.
I feel like the kickdown theoretically wouldn't help but it feels so violent when you use it that maybe it would. I'm sure people on here have tested their cars with other people, hopefully safely so do you guys just downshift into the lowest gear wait for the count and mash throttle or you kickdown and go when you and the guy you're racing both hit it. Question might be overthinking but when you're running cars that are similarly powered to you these little things can really make the difference between taking full advantage of your F8x and it's power. Asking for a stock, f82 DCT obviously for rolls (second gear usually) just to clear everything up. |

If you're talking a spontaneous run, rolling along in 7th and decide to go, then mash the gas and let the trans figure it out. Will be quicker than giving your opponent the "1 moment please" signal while you manually downshift to 2nd.
If you're talking a planned race or acceleration run, then you'd manually select 2nd, or whatever gear is optimal before you go... Be careful in Mexico. Cars tend to get wrecked and lives ruined there. Especially when still learning the car.

always shift down to the right gear manually. honk 3 times. then you both go.
kickdown is slower. and harsher on your trans depending on who you ask. idk who would race using kickdown unless you're trying to cheat and catch the other guy off guard before he's actually ready to race.

Is it confirmed that the new M3/M4 will come with Automatic transmission instead of DCT? if so, will Automatic transmission gives the fun and joy of DCT ? I have driven 750I automatic and it was boring, slow and has a noticeable lag in shifting.

the auto in the M5 and X3M is amazing. Doesn't bang like a dct but shifts are instantaneous and no issues driving around town like DCT.

I recently test drove an F90 M5, my biggest disapointment with the car is the 8AT.

Especially when considering that the DCT uses wet clutches...

Yes, it feels heavy and sluggish compared to a DCT. I drove it in Sport+ everything, S3 and 4WD DSC off. The 8AT is not able to handle an all out powershift like the DCT, the engine power is cut on upshifts which causes a short pause in acceleration with each upshift. The downshifts are also not as immediate and crisp. I drove it back to back with a PDK 992 C4 and my M4cs, the 8AT is not quite on par with a good dual clutch in terms of feel and sportiness.

Don't notice any issues around town with the DCT M4? My 335i had a DCT too, early versions of the software made it awful but after updating it was great.

do you have GTS flash? and what settings do you drive in around town. I noticed in can be jerky at very low rpms when decelerating or accelerating from a stop in stop and go traffic

Totally stock for now. Have a BMW dealer warranty, don't wanna risk it. So far I don't have any issues with the stock mapping that would make me rush to flash a GTS map.

do you drive in d1 d2 or d3 around town? D1 makes you downshift at a weird time when stopping so the engine lugs and d3 always feels aggressive; I'm guessing you use d2?
