ARMY Veteran seeking help F80 engine blown BMW will not honor the warranty
UPDATE:
I was in the impression that someone here would help me. But some decide to attack me because I used the title that I'm Army Veteran. Thanks for the actual helpful comments. Bottom line I did not money shifted the car. I'm not the only one with this problem. This engine should not failed this early in the game. I hope BMW find the real reason why my car failed. And you all can benefit from it. Last edited by F80M3VETERAN; 11-20-2015 at 04:09 PM.. Reason: To end the nonsense! |

WOW! I don't believe one time would kill an engine. However multiple times especially if cold could do serious damage. Do these not have REV limiters? Also the ECM can record everything in history.

If your car is a manual and the ECU logged a money shift, then you're up the creek without a paddle. Park it and get a cheap Honda from the lemon lot until you can find an S55 on ebay.
Playing the veteran card for blowing your engine is not going to net you extra sympathy or good will. |

What you need to do is get the actual details out of the dealer. What RPM do they say it was over-revved to? Was it 8,000 RPM, or 10,000? There's a big difference. Either way, the reality is that IF the engine was indeed over-revved (and the ECU WILL record it), they technically can deny coverage. We need all the facts first.

That sucks. I live close to fort bragg. To clarify, if they say you over revved then I guarantee you did. Usually this is from a money shift (only happens on manual transmissions to my knowledge). Its recorded and if they felt inclined could tell you exactly when it happened. Whether this caused the drivetrain failure is a different story. You are not the first to post here about this issue. To clarify before a bunch of people start posting, your rev limiter will do nothing to prevent an over rev if you money shift. The odds are definitely stacked against you because they have objective evidence that an event occurred that could have led to your drivetrain malfunction. Its all bullshit but you are going to have a hard time fighting this based on other peoples experiences I've read about. Hopefully someone will post something that will help you. I hate it for you. Best of luck!

limiter like someone mentioned. My 2k10 porsche c2s was manual and if u over rev it would just cut off. GL keep us posted

What worries me as a 6 speed owner:
Rev match will also blip the throttle on up-shifts (going from 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc.) to ensure a smooth shift; that being said, it blips RPMs up, obviously. What if OP and the other over rev cases on 6-spd's never "over rev'd", but shifted at max RPM, and the car its self rev matched? That's had me shaking in my boots a couple times...

There is no way to stop an over-rev on a downshift that results in being in too low of a gear. A rev limiter can not help you in this situation. If you MANUALLY downshift to too low of a gear for the speed you are going, the engine will mechanically be rotating faster than it should be. A rev limiter will cut fuel, but that doesn't stop the engine from spinning. If you are increasing in speed and in RPM and hit the rev limiter, it will work in that kind of scenario (cutting fuel will stop the engine from continuing to increase in rotation speed). This is where a DCT car is helpful. You can not "money shift" with DCT because the computer knows where the RPM's will end up at after a downshift and will just not listen to you basically if it is going to cause a problem. Obviously, with a manual it is in your own hands. I money shifted an engine once and bent all the valves in the head. Fortunately, I had a spare head so no real harm.

So interesting question on the money shift topic.....If you are in Efficient or Spot plus, notice how the car rev matches just before you are downshifting into the intended gear. Happens pretty fast. Am wondering if you were to accidentally money shift from say 3rd or 5th to 2nd, would the car over rev even before you go into second and let the clutch out because that's what you are trying to do....go into second. Or it would protect against that and you would really have to be in 2nd and let go off the clutch to over rev and cause the money shift.
Hope that made sense.

While it sucks the engine is blown, I don't follow as to what the OP being a military veteran has to do with a blown engine...
So in theory, if this happened to me today (*knock on wood) and if I were say NOT a veteran, then does my misfortune rank significantly less?? My two cents? Disrespectful as f*ck to those who have served and continue to serve out country, who have REAL issues such as PTSD or even finding civilian work, but you want to use that card because you over revved your 75K vehicle??! By definition, a military veteran is a person who has served, but is no longer in the military. If you are still on active duty, you are not yet a veteran.
