I also wouldnt mind a more compact variant of the S63B44Tü.

And if the the F80 M3 enigine is really a turbocharged inline-6, what is the Redline we are looking at? Any chance that their R&D will enable them to come up with a high revving 8000RPM turbo-six.

From a volumetric efficiency perspective, the new "S55" will compete with, and likely exceed, the Nissan VR38 motor. It is just that BMW doesn't have as much displacement to work with. Not that this fact is of any real consolation when it comes down to overall performance, but it is what it is. BMW will also make up some ground against their competition (which, strictly speaking, doesn't really include the GTR anyway) by being somewhat lighter that they are.

What is the difference of the engine having an inline 6 than a v6 anyway? I'm quite curious on this one since, I've been looking to the engine's displacement thinking it the bigger the engine the better it performs in terms of power.

V6 in general is a more compact engine(with the same displacement), shorter.

An I6 is a smoother running engine. But longer. Simply put.

BMW has been a I6 engine builer for decades now.Lots of experience. So why not stick with an I6?

So they're gonna reroute hot coolant from the radiator to cool down the intake air temp,how's that better than a fmic exposed to much cooler air than coolant temps?

The engine coolant and intercooler will be two separate circuits. The intercooler will have its own heat exchanger to disipate heat.

If only I could figure out a way to afford a 2013 before they go out of production. I had a 2011 135i w/ the N55 and there's no comparing that motor to the M V8 for sound or fun factor. Oh we'll, I guess there are always used ones to consider.

If I'm not mistaken, the M3 V8 has won more races than any previous M3's, From Le-Mans, to 24 Hours Nürburgring, also the 1000 km of Zhuhai, the 12 hours of Sebring, etc...

The Return of the M3 to GT2 and GT4 Races was on a V8.... 4.4 or 4.8 V8 would of been the next ascending natural choice.... I personally don't care about gas consumption when buying an M3, if I were, I wouldn't buy a sports car! there are other choices. It is clear that they are doing it for EPA restrictions, and BMW will figure it out and make an outstanding I-6 turbo, bi-turbo, whatever, but there is no way that you can convince me that a V8 under the hands of BMW wouldn't had grown to be an amazing engine/performance car!

I-6 belongs to M3 is a bs statement, it does not apply at all. Again, I do not doubt they are going to come up with a great I-6 m3 engine, but, the V8 had a great chance to be an even greater machine!

I'm sticking with my car, I know it will definitely be a collectors car.

P.S. I had previous generations of M3, so I'm not a "newbie". V8 is my favorite, the sound, the personality, feels like a true super car, muscle car, and a great performance car in general. Best M3 built ever! this is a statement from most Car Magazines!

Maserati revealed yesterday the specifications of its new 3.0 V6 twin-turbocharged engine - developed by Ferrari in Maranello - that will be used in the new 2014 Maserati Quattroporte. It V6 unit generates 404hp at 5500rpm and 406lb-ft across an impressively broad 1500-5000rpm band. Looking at these numbers, I do not see much space for bigger numbers in the new M3 inline 6 turbocharged engine ...

That sounds like a nice engine, but by no means does it represent the highest practical specific output for a turbocharged six cylinder application. Just look at the latest iteration of the VR38DETT in the Nissan GTR making 545hp, for example. That is just over 143hp/L, which would mean 430hp in a theoretical 3.0L application.

The S65 has a higher specific output than the outgoing naturally aspirated Maserati V8. There's really no reason to doubt that the upcoming "S55" will continue this trend vs. the new V6. This all makes sense of course, when you consider that the M3/M4 are performance cars while the Quattroporte is an executive sedan.

You're absolutely correct! However, what i really meant with no much space was that we cannot expect much more than this number (404hp). 24hp (430hp) is around 6% more. Feasible ... Quattroporte is a italian sedan whose engine project is dated as from 2003. In 2003 BMW M5 used to have 400hp ...

Sure, but remember, that was just an example. There are production engines making 150hp/L or more. It is not a stretch to think BMW can meet or exceed that figure.

I guess I just don't agree that the new Maserati engine is a very good measuring stick for what we can expect in an M3/M4. To me it seems arbitrary.

I think the M3 will be around 140-150 hp per liter.

Just look at the 911 GT2 RS, makes over 172 hp per liter and you know Porsche could have easily pushed beyond that even. Granted, Porsche makes prob the best turbo engines in the world but regardless there is surely a good amount of power to be had beyond the Maserati output.
