I have had my entire suspension apart twice now, torqued everything at curb, replaced my strut bearing, and the noise is still there.

I found the official BMW procedure for replacing the EDC dampers and it shows a special tool being used to seat the damper into the clevis in the spindle to a specific position:

This tool pulls the strut down to a specified torque as shown here:

Anyone know anything about this tool? It appears to be specifically for the F80 and I can't find one to buy online.

I'm pretty sure it's a steering rack issue. Have you tried asking them to look at that?

If it was a steering rack issue, it seems that I would feel it through the steering wheel to some extent.

For example, tapping on the tie rod or the steering rack body with a hammer sends a vibration through the steering wheel. But I can't feel the clunk there at all, and different steer angles have no effect on the noise.

The vibration comes mostly through the floor and pedals and the noise mostly sounds like it's in the area of the upper strut mount.

On my 2017 M4 the clunk only appears when the drivers side front Wheel gets airborn and drops down. A typical top mount bearing issue, but the car has only done 11000 miles and the top mount/shock is tight and correctly mounted after lowering springs. No other issues or strange feel in the steering. Only clunk when suspension gets unloaded for a short time and then hits the ground again.

Clunk on my car too, only drivers side. Seems to be the top plate. The noise was there since I can remember (Im the original owner), it was there on the stock, H&R SS springs, and now KW DDC. Worth noting that only happens over sharp bumps like reflectors.

I suspect its the top plate but I don't know if changing it will do anything, maybe a inherent design issue? I tried to re-torque the sway bar with load, even though when I installed it I compressed the suspension, as I suspect it didn't help. I dont think mine is related to the steering rack, as nothing is felt in the steering and the noise is from the shock tower.

Also note worthy, the noise is progressively worse from comfort to sport-plus.

I've had it with this issue. I'm digging in as deep as I can on this problem. No promises that I can solve it, but I'll be posting updates here:

Same thing is going on with my car, over bumps it's almost like the sway bar is clunking but others have ruled that out. IT only comes through on the driver's side on mine as well. It happened after being lowered on Eibachs after a few thousand miles or so. I'm sure someone on this forum will figure this out in time.

The clunking is probably more noticed because the rebound damping is higher which makes the Wheel "hang in the air" more until it drops down and hit the ground on uneven Surfaces. To me that is typical for a top mount problem.

Interesting thread here. I have the driver side clunk over choppy surfaces too, doesn't seem to affect things while driving at speed. Anyone still having this issue with an aftermarket camber plate? Build date on the car is 09/14.

Changed the top mount the other day with all new fasteners and torque to BMW spec. Clunk is still there, I dont think its the rack but everything in the suspension is tight and feels like new. Car has never been driven in the winter, barely sees rain or crappy roads, and has 40k km, suspension and fasteners all look almost brand new.

Been driving the car around with the wheel setting in Sport+ and it seems the issue has become less noticeable? Anyone else with similar feedback?

Same here! Only happens when driving over reflectors at LOW speed and on the drivers side ONLY...

guys I am having the same issue and it made me paranoid. I also belive it causes wear on lower arm as mine was completely rubbish after 1000 miles.

I have changed the top strut mount
shock absorber
lower arm
it is still there.

Also my suspensions went wrong, as I also have a super bumpy drive especially at low speeds. it feels like my suspensions dont work at all doesnt matter comforr spor or sport plus. my garage says my top strut moves therefore it plays with whole suspension mechanism.
***
one thing i noticed when going over bumps. if I brake there is no clank sound. which part should we relate this?***

I dont mind going bmw and have it fixed but seems like so many people tried it yet no proper solution.

what do you guys recommend?

The fix is simple and is remedied here: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1637057

I adjusted the nut and the clunking is gone on the drivers side. Steering is tighter. Reason is the new angle causes play in the steering gear. I need to do it to the passenger side too. Recommend you do 3 clicks first, drive the car and adjust as needed before putting the pan back on. You will also need to mark the current position to the steering gear houseboy, not just the inside notches very well so you know where you started. You can also use your phone and take pictures... that’s what I did.

Slightly off topic: I had forgotten about this thread. I think this might be the single greatest contribution I've ever made to BP. A year later, still quiet as church mouse, saved years off my life and sanity.

Can you explain how to get access to this nut? Jack up the car, take the front pan off, then which general area to look? Is the nut facing downward or upward? Is there room to get a 17mm socket on the nut, or do we need to use a crescent wrench?

Can anyone please clarify how to get to this nut? I know where it is, but can’t get to it from topside. It seems impossible to get access. Do you get to this from underneath?

Same issue here with MP HAS with less than 5K on them…

Interested in sourcing some more options to look into.
