Looking into buying a f80 and this one I found had 4 owners and is somehow still CPO by Bmw. When looking into the car fax, it just doesn't make any sense to me. The car bounced all over the place from owners to dealers in the span of 4 years without many service records. Not sure if I should stay away or try to get a deal on this one

The number of owners many not be important, and CPO is good for peace of mind.
I once bought a 440i, at one & half year old with 6k miles on it, and with 3 previous owners. It has been my most reliable car ever for two & a half years when I px it for my current M4. So now it's got 4 previous owners on record but has been very well cared-for and trouble-free. |

Why would the number of owners matter to CPO? CPO is a warranty and filter to hopefully exclude the worst cars. It is not a guarantee of a one owner car with no accidents or other incidents in its history. Dealers inspect and recondition cars when necessary, including cars they buy at auction. As far service history, the dealer should be able to provide better info than CarFax, which is also not guaranteed to be complete.

Not all dealers report to CarFax. My F82 had all service intervals and none appeared on CarFax. It was later sold as CPO. CarFax guarantees against a branded title but does not guarantee a complete history.

CarFax isn't enough, you need to find a friendly BMW service advisor that will supply you with detailed service history. I had to go through a few service advisors until one provided me the service history with previous owner's information redacted.
The vehicle is CPO'ed and the last two owners barely drove the car (~7k miles in the past ~two years). As long as the vehicle checks out in person, interior isn't coated in body fluids, and you get a PPI, I wouldn't worry much. |

If all 4 owners maintained the car correctly, I wouldn't be worried. How it was treated and maintained is more important.

Personally would stay away.
I was looking for RS4 and 993s , many with 5 owners and such. That’s 5 owners who bought the vehicle and said let’s see what this got. As oppose to one owner who got over the new phase and just drove it. Obviously it can go so many different ways. Would want to see maintenance paperwork at bare minimum and expect some decent savings. Also selling it would cause issues as it’s early in life with many owners. Goodluck on ur search ! |

Update: I ended up buying the car. All the service was completed at Bmw. Had the break in service ✅ the F80 was ceramic coated from the first owner. Not a single scratch, swirl mark, or rock chip. I was shocked how well the car was cared for

AdnanH35 congratulations when the first previous owner takes there time to do things like ceramic the car that means it was well taken care of. Stay safe out there and buy some snow tires if you live in the snow!
