'Empty' is a translation from german 'Leergewicht', meaning DIN weight, not dry weight ('Trockengewicht').

99% of the mpg-related statements in this thread are equally misleading as they connect/compare a BMW statement on EU norm consumption to individual milage numbers and draw false conclusions.

Absolutely. And neither of your experiences are atypical. When you average it out over everyone, I SWAG it at about 16/17 based on passed discussions.

I would get a more practical car. Nobody needs an M4/M3 or large SUV but people buy them because they can. If you are pinching pennies on gas you shouldn't be buying a sports oriented car.

the people in europe that can afford an M4 certainly can afford it more than you or I. and a couple mpg difference is about 20 euro on a single fill up. i don't equate being rich and being wise. one can lead to the other. not vice versa.

We all like to get good fuel mileage if possible, but this is an M car and the economy of it should be the last thing on your mind. Whatever BMW claims this car will achieve for MPG, it will be with auto start/stop, Eco-Pro modes, or whatever shit they can con the EPA with. My real world MPGs for my prior M3 and wife's current X1 are well below BMW's estimates, probably because we don't use their econo nannies.

in this day and age it is on everyone's mind and none more than the company that built this car. its not just for saving expenses on a commodity that only will get more expensive to use but also in emissions. its the very reason this car has a small twin turbo inline 6.

i certainly drive my cars, but i also intend to use this car as a daily driver. economy does factor in. if anything an M3 has always been a jack of all trades.

i agree with what a previous commenter said. any improvement over the previous generation is welcome considering the performance gains. who doesn't want a more effecient engine?

We understand where you are coming from but for many people especially over 25-30 who have a family we have more than one car so if someone wants to takes. Trip or go to the store we take a mini van or what have you.

As the CAFE standards close in more and more cars/trucks will have small engines. Just look at the new aluminum ford with a 2.7. A smaller engine than the M3/4 in a full size pickup!

I also agree that whatever numbers it gets doing 55 (our interstates just went up to 70mph) is irrelevant to what people will actually do with the car most of the time.

N54 335i TOURING here, 6MT with about 380-400hp crank and over the past 3 years according to the trip computer I have 22.4mpg (US) average combined cycle (10.5 litres per 100km). Probably 70/30 highway/city. Lots of vigorous open road driving and I imagine our traffic isn't as bad as your cities.

I get 6-7mpg on the track.

Agreed. I don't actually care what mileage the M3 gets as I don't expect decent mileage in a high performance car. What I do care about is decent range.

I did not buy the E90 M3 because of the poor gas mileage.
If I did not get the F80, I would get a 4 cyl diesel. If I could afford it, I would get an i-8.

The data on the BMW configurator puts fuel consumption at 8.3/8.8 l /100km = about 26 mpg. the 6% better fuel efficiency of the DCT might push me over the $2900 / 89 lbs hump... Any thoughts as to whether that is a real difference in everyday driving?

You haven't got a clue have you Benji?! The new M3 should cost me $ 200 per month less to fuel than my E90 M3.. I'm happy with that. It also means I can travel further before having to fill up.

For the cost of your M3 in the States you would be looking at a 320d here in Europe and paying more to fuel that car than an M3 in the States so don't patronise me regarding my finances and tell me what I should or shouldn't be buying.

I would have bought this car regardless of fuel economy but a more powerful and fuel efficient M3 is good news. Nobody is suggesting that you should buy this car for it's fuel economy but for those of us who live in countries where fuel is not cheap it's a bonus that we can run our new M3s and save a bit of cash on fuel compared to the outgoing model.

why would i get an M3 that fits my family fine and not drive it everywhere? haha. its a perfect road trip car. also great for those little trips to the grocery store. take the long way home. forget the minivan.
