GoPro model for in-car track video?

Looking for suggestions, my old GoPro died from water exposure... any recommendations for a replacement, mainly to be used in-car at the track? Is the brand-newest model less likely to overheat? That's my main concern, I previously had the Hero8. I don't need a lot of fancy features. Hero10 worth it?

Thx

The 10, which can record 4k60 reliably. The 9 also works ok.

It's disappointing to still struggle for consistent 4k60 videos nowadays

I’ll throw out the suggestion of a Smartycam.

Depending on which version(2.1 vs 3), you can run one without a connected Aim CAN device.

The scalability and integration to use as a learning tool is invaluable.

I love the smartycam integration, but the quality is so bad.

The 3 finally gets you to 1080k60... it feels like a decade too late

Agreed.

The 3 is better, but even then it doesnt have a seperate audio line so stuck with an internal mic.

Forgot about those, thx.... but since I already sunk the $$ into a Catalyst (which I used one then crashed), I think will try to get my money's worth from that and save a bit by going with the Costco Hero10 bundle

Go for a Hero 10 with an external mic for improved sound capture.

The GoPro is good *when it works*. I have a Hero 9 which seems to power off for my fast sessions.

I hear that DJI (known for their drones) makes a very good alternative. Maybe worth researching.

Thanks gents -- I went with the Hero 10 bundle from Costco, we'll see. Costco's nice as they're pretty lenient with returning things.

How are you guys mounting the GoPro's in car? Looking for ideas also.

Are some phone mounts approved vs not? Want to have Harrys or something like it but the last event I went to they were not letting people use certain mounts from what I understood.

I use a Ram suction cup thing with ext arms which connect to the passenger seat back. My seats (Cobra Nogaro) have a nice flat smooth surface which allows for a strong suction. It still worked with my old OE competition seats but not as well.

(Don't tell Tech that I'm not using a tether)

See my post in this thread with a pic:

I put that car into the wall coming out of bus stop at WGI at ~70 MPH and that thing didn't budge

i like to mount the gopro on the side of my helmet so any viewer gets nauseated while watching my youtube videos. youtube.com/thatwhitem4

Fun fact: when mounting a gopro on the back tailgate next to the license plate, it takes my Hero9 twelve minutes to overheat and shut off. My Hero3 overheats after three minutes lol

Run it without a battery, connected to a USB directly, and it runs for hours. But that means turning it on after turning the car on every time

I look forward to being able to keep the battery in without it overheating. One day! Maybe the gopro 15 in 2030

Yeah, this is what I used to do -- but in last few events it was still acting wonky at times. Fingers crossed for better luck with the 10

My hero 9 reliability improved by changing to a smaller capacity SD card. Somewhere on the internet I read this is a thing. 128 gig is plenty.

I use 400gb cards and they'll record for hours on end so long as the battery is not in the device.
It goes without saying you need the fastest card there is

Interesting, that happens to be the exact card I was using. I previously was recording 60 fps, may just keep it at 30 going forward -- would cut down on file size, more of an issue with the transfers in/out of RaceChrono, etc

Card speed class is definitely something to look out for, V30 is the minimum recommended for 4K. If you go higher in frame rates you’ll want V60 or 90 if supported.
