It's an International Driving Permit (IDP), not an international drivers license. It is not a drivers license, and doesn't take the place of a drivers license, it merely translates the information on your drivers license to a bunch of languages to make it easier for the police to figure out who to issue the ticket to and what their contact info is.

The European Union has open borders and you can freely drive from one country to another. No one is going to physically restrain you from entering a country requiring IDP if you don't have one.

It is not a new requirement, laws requiring IDPs have been in effect in various countries for years (decades?) Think of an IDP like insurance. You don't need it until you get in an accident; you don't need an IDP unless you get stopped, but by law, it is required in many countries.

Ignorance if the law is not a defense!

I have been driving in Europe (twice in Austria) and Asia few times and always bring an IDL with me.
Try Googling "which countries require an International Driving Permit" for a definitive answer. You'll find that there are other countries besides Austria that require an IDP.

Sorry if I seem a little snarky about this, but in the five years since I did my first Euro Delivery, questions about the IDP come up constantly on the forums. There are so many resources to help you plan a visit to Europe, and somehow the requirement for an IDP goes unnoticed. Google is your friend! Start with "driving in Europe". You can actually be fined if you get stopped in a country that requires an IDP and you don't have one!

Thank you for correcting me. Yes, it is International Driving Permit. As I said before, it is a peace of mind to getting one. The IDP is good for one year (a year from issue date) and you can use it when you have another trip that you are planning to drive over there.

Yes, a little snarky. I've driven in Europe at least a dozen times, and in Austria at least twice. I read all the BMW welcome material and spend too much time on the forums. It certainly can be overlooked. I have heard the IDP mentioned, so it is not new to me, but it is always described as a good idea to have and the countries I've seen mentioned that require it did not include the major mainland European ones, so I was surprised to hear Austria mentioned. That is all. And besides, I wasn't asking you, I was asking the OP. I usually don't bite on these forums, but you come off a little bad above. Sorry in advance.

My M4 build is nearly identical to your M3, except that I didn't get the Competition Package, Enhanced USB, or Parking Assistant, but I did get the Power Rear Sunshade.

Can you confirm that the M Lap Timer will work on an iPod Touch? I bought one just to get the BMW apps that aren't available on Android and I was really hoping that the M Lap Timer on an iPod Touch worked in the car.
I can 100% confirm it works. I specifically bought the iTouch (6th gen) for this trip. The music loads up, and hte M Lap timer works. When I first connected it, at the Welt, I couldn't find the M Lap Timer on the BMW screen, but an hour later it popped up. So it possibly has to load up, with the music. But it did work...I used it on the skid pad and the Nordschleife

Nice trip I did a 16 day trip back in August/sep 2015 and that too with a 1 year old and a 4 month pregnant wife Was a blast

I couldn't agree more on the allocation crap. I too dumped the local dealer because they were charging too much and didn't have an allocation. Luckily for me, I had researched the crap out in this section of the forum and knew all about allocations, etc. So I only targeted dealers that I never did t deal without an allocation. I sent an email to around 9 dealers and 3 agreed to $1k over invoice. I settled for the closest one and we agreed to $1000 over whatever invoice would be for 2016. 3 months later when the 2016 pricing released, he called me to inform me that he had an allocation and I gave the go ahead to proceed. Rest was smooth from there.

I still don't understand the allocation process, why it is there in the first place Unfortunately it is also something that allows the stealerships to charge more.
