Getting text messages to show up

On my 17 m3 (no apple play) I would see a small envelope icon on the upper right of the idrive screen.

On my 18 (with car play) I can't seem to get it to work. On my iPhone I would usually go to the Bluetooth setting and click sync notifications and it would work. Now instead of that I see an option for CarPlay. I used car play and prefer the bmw system so I have that disabled

Anyway to get it to work?

Using iPhone X max

Just a guess... the ‘17 had the Wireless Charging option, the 18 does not. Note: there will be no envelope icon while in CarPlay mode regardless of Wireless charging option.

I have an 18 m3 with car play. On my previous 17 (without car play) I would check sync notifications under Bluetooth settings and it would show an envelope icon on idrive.

With the 18 no such options. Ok so I'll use car play. But it doesn't give you a notification when you get a new text. Wtf.. any ideas?

Also if you have any good suggestions as to where to put my iPhone XS Max let me know plz

before contacting bmw, i need to know what is normal

if you are connected via car play but in the idrive menu, not car play, and get a text message; do you get any notification?

In the iDrive header (where time, audio, etc is displayed), a Notification icon will appear along with the number of Notifications available. You then have to go into the iDrive Notification menu to see the text. There's no audible indication that a message has arrived, so you have to notice the icon in the iDrive screen. fwiw, I've got one of the shortcut buttons programmed to bring me directly to the Notification screen.

For this to work - at least with an iPhone - you've got to turn on 'Show Notifications' in the iPhone's Bluetooth menu for the device you're connecting (tap the 'i' icon next to the device). There may be something similar for Android devices.

Thanks. It's really annoying. I'm almost always in the radio menu listening to xm radio and I have no idea when I have a new text

Isn't it one or the other? If you have CarPlay active on your phone then under BMW notifications, it won't show the text messages.

You can also simply touch the notification icon to bring up the text messages; much quicker than going thru the menus.

That's very interesting. I don't have a touch screen so didn't know that. It may be a good post under the "What Did You Learn…" thread in the main forum.
