Rear Tire Choices

Need a set of rears now (275 35 19) currently have PSS all round....which i would naturally just refit. But has/does anyone run PS4S on the rears ONLY?

Is there enough tread pattern to notice a difference?

The car isnt tracked, just regular mixed driving.

Thanks in advance

Plenty of debate previously on the m3cutters forum. There was some who thought it was a huge improvement with grip and others that really didn't like them due to the softer more square sidewall (felt squishy apparently). If it helps my rears are almost done and I'll be going PS4S with MPSS on the front. With so much difference of opinion I thought I'd try it and make my own mind up.

I have MPSS on my new M4 CP but had 4S tyres on my last M4. The difference at this time of year is pretty stark. When warm/dry I don’t think there is much difference but in the damp and cold the 4S’s provide significantly better traction and grip. I would be a little worried about the delta front to rear actually but I am really struggling with my MPSS just now and would probably just fit a set of 4S now if it wasn’t a massive waste of a new set of MPSS!

Honestly I’m not sure MPSS is much better than Cup 2s in the damp/cold so its almost worth getting them for the superior track performance... if you wanted to go that way.

Sorry didn’t properly read your note ... if you don’t intend to track it then I’d be going 4S. For track 4S similar to MPSS with Cup 2 above.

I have MPSS fronts and MP4S rears and it really is a significant improvement over MPSS.
Its eerie just how much rear grip there is, even in the recent cold and greasy road surfaces.
With MPSS, grip seems to drop off once the temps drop below 7ish degrees.
I wouldn't go back to MPSSs...a really great tyre in its day but the 4S is a step improvement.

Great advice chaps! Thanks

Rang costco and have zero stock of MP4S, not sure if specific places like BMW will have them (obviously charge a fortune)
Got to try and source them now....

Am I right in thinking the MP4S is the better rear, but thr MPSS is still the better front?

Your choice but I feel like I have to say its a poor one.
The MP4S really are that much better.

Had 4s on the rear on my old m3 and have done the same on my cp now. But actually gone up a size to 295/30/20. Definitely better grip in wet and dry.

I’ve just reordered ContiSport Contact 5P 275/35/R19 rear and 255/35/R19 on front £830 all in. Quite hard to get hold of though, taking 2 weeks to get fitted.

Id have got the 4S if i could at the time. 380 for a set of MSS seemed good value to me. Maybe i should have looked at going to 285 for a P4S in hindsight.

I dont think there is much problem at 20" size.

Will see how long these last me!

Does anyone actually stock the 4s in M4 size? I've had a quick look at some of the major tyre sites and can't find them.

My local tyre centre had them available so I would guess you can.

Had my M4 comp pack for 48 hours now. Done a couple of hundred miles and have to say the pilot supers are not effective on damp roads. It feels fairly unsafe. Sun was out yesterday and it felt like a new car. Awesome in fact. Evening came and it felt dangerous again.

I don't need to replace the tyres, plenty of wear left in them, but would anyone recommend switching to the 4s and if so, will just on the back suffice?

Is there much difference between the two in the summer? Would I be better off getting winter wheels with true winter tyres or just biting the bullet and getting 4s all round/on the back.

Advice from experience please.

I had 4S on my previous M4 and now MPSS fitted on my new M4CP. I also do not feel safe driving quickly on the MPSS in cold, wet or muddy/leafy surfaces - I had a lot more confidence with the 4S tyre and in the dry/warm I think they are broadly equal. I’m not throwing out the MPSS as they are nearly new but I would 100% go for 4S all round as soon as I can.

Ps - am not a scaredy cat - happy to get the back ending moving on normal roads and have done plenty of flat out track time in the M4 (and other things) - the MPSS just lets go so suddenly in wet/cold conditions. I drove with TC off at all times with the 4S - leave it on with the MPSS.

Rich.

I found the traction on my MPSS to be significantly better after i got the GTS software coded in. Very worthwhile for anyone on any tyres!
