Start your car with the hood up and your head near the engine, report back.
I hear the high ticking of valves/rockers but not the low end knocking in the video.

Could you please share more on which parts caused the metal shavings, what components in addition to the oil pump were changed out (you referred to "upper part")?

Thanks!!!

I'd have big concerns about engine life if they didn't replace everything...at least demanding an extended warranty.

Without more info, i wouldn't freak out peeps

If BMW had this car up on a lift and used a stethoscope to confirm a knocking from the bottom end, that is far different than "I opened my hood and heard a ticking"

I'm still suspicious of them just replacing the engine without further diagnostic.

Guys,

I got a new m4 a month back and have driven it 800 miles, while driving this past weekend on the freeway a metal piece from the car in front of me flew and hit the underhood of my car. Immediately the oil started leaking and got a drive train malfunction error on my car and it stopped. The car was taken to the dealership and now the dealer says that they need to replace the oil gasket and the engine.

How long will this process take and when would they return my car. Such things are not covered by BMW warranty and hence I needed to use my insurance. BMW has quoted 36000 dollars for the parts and labor. There is no exterior damage

Bad luck. Sounds like something split open the oil cooler and you kept driving the engine until it ran out of oil and seized.

The amount of time it takes is going to be dependent on how quickly your insurance can process the claim and cut a check to BMW. Once they get paid and have the motor, it shouldn't take much longer than a week or 2.

Mine makes some loud ticking on cold start - exactly same situation as you. Here's a video:

That ticking is not normal at all. You need to take it in the dealership. Could be several things, none of which are normal. It can be hard to tell from videos, but in this instance, it's pretty clear to me.

How many miles? What year?

Personally, from all the videos that have been uploaded sound perfectly normal to me as even my previous 335i had the same noise.

From what I can tell, the OP posted back on July 2016 and hasn't posted since.

One of the noises in there is normal, the higher pitched quicker tick; the slower heavier sounding one is absent in both f8x in my garage. I'd take it in to dealer for diagnosis.

My car went in last week for this ticking/engine noise issue, and I just picked up from dealer today. They did second service (first one after the break in service) and the ticking noise is gone. Service was simple - oil change only. SO perhaps oil grade / thickness / level all makes a difference too.

As you can tell from my video, the ticking was very obvious. But now it has been resolved completely....so far.

My story. The car is from august 2015 (MY16) and I think I first noticed this sound around 20.000-25.000km. Very noticeable on a cold start in an underground parking, the ticking sound just bounces off the walls into the cabin. To my ears... it's too loud to be normal. Even after warming up still noticeable, albeit to lesser extent.

Now the annoying part, it ain't consistent on mine. There are days when this ticking noise is loud and on other days barely noticeable, or at least not audible from behind the steering wheel. It's not a pretty sound, sounds like oil starvation. I'm obviously a little bit concerned, especially if engines are being replaced over this, yet the car went in for service today and didn't skip a beat. It could be normal. Let's see how this evolves.
I would record it on video just in case you ever need to show BMW the issue.

I had a ticking/knocking sound on my 16 M3 with 9k miles. Mine would go away once car warmed up. Dealer replaced engine.

Interesting... all 2016's. Curious on exact build dates to see if it was after the minor hardware change in January.

Mine has this sound and it's a MY16, but Nov 15 build. I took it to the dealer and they said it was normal. I might have to take it in again.
