I've done this last year on my 2017 M4 (BMW Software Update) but now when I enter my car's VIN, download the file, then place it in the root of my FAT32 formatted USB Drive and place it under the arm rest, when I go to iDrive > Software Update it says the software on this device is not compatible with this vehicle
Tried this twice with 2 diff. file downloads but no luck..... It's downloading a file named UPD09031.bin that is 90.3 MB in size. Same file gets downloaded whether I enter my 2018 M4's VIN or my wife's 2017 X5 VIN. Could it be that BMW is erroneously not providing me with the correct file to update my car? or is it something else that I might be doing wrong? The release notes for this update say that it has better support for iPhones and many bug fixes so I would really like to install it. Last edited by Super Spartan; 03-14-2018 at 05:54 PM.. |

Same here. I have 006.001.044 installed and the “update” is an older version. I called the BMW Genius line and they weren’t able to figure out why this is happening. Looks like BMW’s VIN-based database is out of sync.

Did the BMW genius tell you he is gonna escalate the issue so they’d fix the messed up downloads?

Thanks for all the feedback guys. At least I know it's not my car, pretty messed up from BMW to have this glitch giving us a firmware with an older version.
I hope they can fix it ASAP. Last edited by Super Spartan; 03-14-2018 at 05:52 PM.. |

I just spoke with a BMW Genius and he kept telling me that maybe my car already has that version when I kept repeating that no, me and other users who have older cars are also experiencing this issue and so is my wife on her 2017 X5 so we all cannot have had this update done before which is making the update fail, it's simply downloading a wrong firmware update.
I emailed BMW Genius this thread hoping they would forward it to the concerned team to have this rectified. |

Don’t think so. He probably assumed it was an isolated issue for my VIN and I didn’t know others were having the same problem. May be worth for some of us to call again - Genius hotline is 1-844-4GENIUS.

I just took a look myself and this definitely looks like BMW failed to update their VIN database with the correct software updates available. The current software in my car (2017 F80 w/Nov 2016 build date) is:
TB: 006.006.006 MB: 006.006.006 When I plug in my VIN it says there is an update available for me as well (l have checked probably 3-4 times for an update since I bought the car in Dec 2016, but this is the first time BMW has said my car requires an update). Yet if you look at the release notes BMW posted that includes info for this update, all of the software versions are older than what is in the car (assuming you all have the same or newer software than what I posted above). Also, and I am not completely sure about this, I think BMW uses over-the-air (OTA) to possibly update this software (along with Navigation software, which is separate from the telephone software). That said, I have never been impressed with BMW OTA as it has never worked as advertised for me, especially with the Navigation updates (I needed to go to the dealer to have my navigation maps updated manually). For what it is worth, I seem to remember that I had a different software version installed in the car the last time I looked, which would support my theory that these updates may come via OTA. However, I did not write down the previous software version number, so I could be remembering incorrectly. If there really is another BMW update available for us with the software installed above to account for bug fixes and/or the new phone features available on the market, it looks like we are in a holding pattern until BMW actually posts an update that is applicable to us.

Same Problem
Hi Everyone,
I am having the same issue on my 2018 BMW M2. The file downloaded is UPD09031.bin. I copied it over to the root directory of my USB media with no additional files on the drive. I have been hearing stories of the site either not pulling the right file or the software is already updated. I will reach out to BMW but has anyone gotten a response from BMW yet? |
