BMW Software Update

Just downloaded UPD09032 2017 ZCP.

Old Version

Telephone: TB-003.010.003
Media: MB-003.010.003

This update makes no sense according to release notes Media should have changed to MB 003.008.011

Latest Version

Telephone: TB-003.012.032
Media: MB-003.010.003 (Stayed the same)
HMI: HB-006.007.032 (new - this wasn't there before)

I have a 2018 F80. Here is a screen shot of my currents versions. Anyone know why I only have two lines and not a third with HMI like most of you??

Also, I believe according to BMW website there is a newer version I can update to.

I had two lines also.

Not sure if this is the case for everyone, but it appears we all start with Telephone TB, and Media MB once you update the HMI HB line is added.

Interesting. What does HMI stand for and what does it have to do with? Wonder if ours are missing something from initial factory install.

Is it easy to do the update? Just download from website to USB stick and then insert in car and upload?

Not sure what HMI stands for.

Download the file, then place it in the root of a FAT32 formatted USB Drive and place it under the arm rest, go to iDrive > Software Update.

Used the site with VIN got UPD09042.bin
PDF states version TB 001.062.032

My car has TB 006.017.006

Why would I upgrade that?

And my coding ‘expert’ said that’s just for Bluetooth issues and corrections / configuration. Not iDrive?

I didn’t even try. Heck it’s 132mb

Maybe if these are just COMPATIBLE with our cars, then the car is perhaps checking first to see if what you're installing on the USB is newer than what's on the car already, before going ahead?

So you're sure that's how BMW's TB numbering works? It would make sense, but I don't want to take any guesses...

If it's like typical software, the higher the number at the beginning, the newer the version... Therefore, TB 006 must be newer than TB 001?

No idea but I was not taking the risk given I dont have issues with idrive anyway. My car goes in for breakin service tomorrow, I suspect they would update if it was needed.

In the IT world, HMI usually stands for Human-Machine Interface. It's the dashboard that connects people to the machine.

got my 2018 breakin service yesterday. I asked them to update any software required. I dont see any differences and my paperwork didnt seem to indicate any updates. It maintained my coded full screen carplay as well.

That update is only for the bluetooth and Phones compatibility. As far I am concern.

I know. Therefore I won’t be doing it. Plus the ‘updated’ Version has a much older version #. Makes no sense

If you have newer it won't allow you to do anything.

Top pic is the update I did from
BMW website with no issue on 2/15/2020.

Bottom pic is the update that BMW service did when they replaced the exhaust today 3/25/2020.

So I lost the add on. Not sure I want to re-update or not

I think that BMW had it wrong for a while. The currently newest update appears to be 9051 with a size of 167900 bytes. The file name is UPD09051.bin. The 9031 was up there for a while and did not work on my M3, and it indicated that it was also fit for my 382d, and it did not work on that one either. I guess BMW had some issues with SVN or whatever version management SW they use.

While 9031.bin did not work, I successfully managed to flash the new 9051.bin to my car.

Just curious, does this remove any tuning or codings?

No this is literally mainly for increased bluetooth compatibility etc; its only an iDrive update

Managed to get the latest 9051 onto my 2016 IDrive 4.2 unit. Removed my iPhone and readded it too for good measure.

Spotify App natively functions again on iDrive and connectivity seems faster and less fussy. Time will tell how good it is but looks like it's a worthwhile thing to do.

For all those wondering if this USB updates the whole car - it doesn't, it's just for IDrive. If you want the whole car done that's an "iStep" update and has to be done with ISTA or via a Dealer. That update is for all modules (traction control, engine maps, gearbox, dampers, safety systems etc).

I did the 9051.bin update on my 2016 M4 and my wife's 2018 M3. When I went to the Sirius/XM presets in my M4, some of the stations were missing in the preset slots. I went to add them back in and when I went to station list, the names of the stations are now the artist that's playing on the station and it doesn't show the name of the station. I remember that there was a setting to switch between the views, but I can't figure out how to get it back to the name of the station.

Edit: Found it! This is on my 2016 with iDrive 4, YMMV on higher version iDrives.

Select the "Radio" button, select "Satellite Radio". Click on the iDrive controller to select "Station List". Scroll to the top of the list. Select "Change view". The selection will toggle between "title", "artist", "channel". Title displays the title of the song playing, artist displays the artist of the song playing, and channel displays the channel name.

After the update, I lost a bunch of presets and the view changed from channel to artist.
