Love the sound of that Swedish E46. Once you open up these NA high revving M cars all hell brake loose. So maybe this is the time when we mourn the death of them and get all depressed before we can embrace the new cars. Not really suitable for dropping off the kids at daycare but this S65 is pretty racy as well.

I think of it this way: As mean and awesome as the N/A M's are, this will eat them all. ESPECIALLY when tuned- holy moly.

For me, average income Joe, it is difficult to get an E90 M3 into the 500+crank HP range. With the next S55, that won't be the case at all and that is worth celebrating. But I've been in love with turbo cars since the golden age of japanese TT 6's (300z, 3000GT VR4 and Supra Turbo). I auto-x'd DSM's in the late 90's and they weighed more than this F80 M3 is going to weigh.

If some are mourning for now, that's cool. Weep with those who are weeping, but inside I am elated. Can't wait to see these on the road.

and I'm sorry, but I don't know anyone who doesn't prefer the sound of the S65 over the S54 (other than perhaps current e46 owners, but those are biased opinions).
Speaking of biased.

If BMW were to table ideas and stop evolving processes based on something as shallow as engine sound, I wouldn't be the BMW enthusiast I am. With two turbos screaming and the exhaust opened up a bit I'm sure it'll sound just fine.

And for the record, Car and Driver DO think the 335i has a killer exhaust note. Something to consider from the "outside".

I can't wait to fulfill my dream of driving the M4 on the Ring next year with a Euro delivery! Just salivating when I see these clips and how I'm hating on the test drivers

Why do ppl keep acting like the M4 will get an extra 100RWHP with just a tune? Its already almost maxed out with not much more room for improvement.

Well said, I feel the same.. I'm pretty sure this is going to be "The" car for years to come. Turbos generally equate to easy power gains in the tune department. Hopefully the turbos are a decent size and the intercooler is efficient enough to handle more heat. Cause if they are, there's going to be some exciting tunes with little to no other modification needed to get some nice power/torque increases (not that this thing will likely need them). Then we just need the turbos to be big enough to hold pressure through the RPM range and we have a winner. (It's all about the curves.. )

I guess we'll see soon. It's going to be tough giving up the S65 but I don't think I'll be able to resist.

They look to be pushing hard in these video's and the car looks good. So excited..

I'm not really that excited over the power bump in itself. I've driven several S63TU cars on and off the track and there is no way I would swap the S65 for the S63TU even if it has way more power. 414 hp is plenty on the road and the S65 is just a so much more exciting engine. However, my hope lies in that the overall package of the F8X will be equally or maybe even more exciting with a fresher more modern feel. It's nice with something a bit different after a few years but I think most of us S65 owners will need quite some time to adjust to the loss of this engine and the stellar package the E9X M3 is. What excites me most about the F8X is how it looks on the track. It looks agile and fast. The rest will hopefully be a pleasant surprise.

What's interesting is that either motor trend or car and driver (somebody pointed it out) argued that the 335i was a better car for city use than an S65 equipped M3. Power band and torque I suppose.
I can't remember the point they were making.

Considering that I've never personally piloted an S65 powered M, I can't say. But I've blown the doors off of an m3 from an on ramp through about 95mph in my previous 335i (jb4, DP, Fmic and meth injection) and still wished I was in the M3. It really is the total package. Then again, the F80 is the subject at hand and we are all waiting to see it for ourselves first.

In really looking forward to reviews and comparison tests.

The turbos run at a maximum of 1.25 bar boost but often less, the electronic brain only cranking up to that level of pressure under high operating temperatures or at high altitude. It means the power and torque figures will remain consistent in the vast majority of conditions. As Vice President of engineering, Albert Biermann, explains, that means a standard M3/M4 will often be as fast on track as a tuned car with a claimed additional 50bhp but no extra leeway to continue to develop that power as operating temperatures soar.
That means the S55 power is not almost maxed out.
