Drove around all day yesterday and and didn't notice the clunk at all. The true test is when I take this particular Manhattan bridge ramp that has me turning right while hitting a series of small sharp bumps that makes my car clunk 100% of the time.
I will keep people posted. Alan

Adjusted my preload this evening, noise is gone. Thanks for keeping us updated!
NB: I think I over-tightened a touch. The noise is absent, but now wheel is slow to return to center. I'll get back underneath the car tomorrow and ease up on it a little.

Note that, by my count, there are 30 equally-spaced notches on the adjustment bolt assembly. So tightening 3-4 notches corresponds to about 1/8 turn (as has been quoted earlier in this thread and others). It's very difficult to get a good look at these notches while on your back, under the car, so I found it was easier to go by fractions of a full rotation (1/8, etc.). Pic below for reference.

My car is still clunk free after the steering column bolt adjustment. No change to my alignment that i could tell. If anything it does feel like it made my steering wheel slightly firmer to turn. Its as if comfort mode steering is now in between comfort/sport assist after turning the bolt 3-4 notches. Barely perceivable but i'm sensitive to these types of things with my car. Either way i'm 10000x happier with out cringing going over bumps and having the car feel like a 1980's beater corolla with clunks.

All in all, very much worthwhile even after having to go back underneath tonight and ease up a notch or so.

Following up on my previous posts, I backed out the bolt approx 1-1.5 notches tonight to ease some of the tightness in the steering. Clunk still absent and steering back to (mostly) normal. Still feels slightly heavier as mentioned in the posts above, but overall behaves as normal.

Sorry for the newbie question. What does this bolt actually do?
I'm quite familiar with suspension parts and the mechanics, but never touch steering racks nor understand its mechanism. |

On a very high level, it's my understanding that it keeps the rack in contact with the pinion gear

I showed this thread to my mechanic and it fixed the clunk from my driver's side suspension. Good stuff

Just to add to this Thread
The famous clunk is not related to Top Plates as initially speculated, I have switched to Ground Control Plates & Springs ~ 5000 kms ago and still get the same random low speed 1992 Honda civic clunk. I am looking forward to finding some time to get this steering rack bolt tightened. Thanks to all who contributed and reported in.

Hi guys, I've been dealing with a creaking/clicking noise since I installed my swift springs this past February, will adjusting the steering rack also fix the clicking/creaking noise that is generated when turning the wheel left/right, or is this only for the suspension travel thump that happens when going over bumps?

I just started getting this clunk this week after driving on snow packed roads that haven't been plowed. I saw another video in an F30 where the guy jiggled the steering wheel with the car off and it made the sound, and it does the same on our cars. I'll have to hit a shop next week and hope I have the revision that doesn't need the special tool.

Took mine to a shop today. They went 5 notches before the noise/feel was mostly gone when jiggling the steering wheel. I didn't want to go any further without driving the car. The noise seems gone, but the unplowed snow that was causing it has also softened up a ton today. Steering feels slightly tighter I guess? The shop had never heard of this, thanks a ton for this thread.
