I am replacing my modified 2012 Porsche Cayman R with the New M4 Coupe!
The Cayman R and new Cayman S & GTS are phenomenal cars; responsive steering, go-kart handling, superb looks & dynamics...however, they suffer from underpowered engines that lack low down torque and will likely leave you demanding more.. Unless you transplant a 3.8 engine in the car, or install a turbo kit, the Cayman will always be underpowered compared to the BMW M cars and Porsche 911. Sure, you can argue that straight line performance is not everything, and that the Cayman is pound for pound, the better 'driver's car', but for a daily driver that offers higher refinement, more versatility, probably more than ample fun and great performance on track, the BMW M4 is the smarter choice! At least that was my justification :-) Imagine an M4 with Wheel Spacers, Lowering Springs, Race Brake Pads, Performance Exhaust, Headers, Intake, ECU Tune, Lightweight Battery & R-Compound Tires! This is making me forget about my Cayman R very quickly!! |

The new M4 should run from a Cayman S or GTS, but we'll see how it goes before I come back. I would have a hard time moving on from this Porsche, I must say, it's become something special to be, beyond any other car I've owned. |

Back in September, I had the opportunity to visit the Porsche factory in Leipzig and drive back to back a new Cayman and a 997 carrera s both with PDK. I had an hour of track time playing lead follow with a buddy and an instructor. Make no mistake, the Cayman is the real deal. We where flogging both cars having a terrific time chasing the instructor. Hands down the Cayman outhandles the 911. Its just sooooo expensive once its optioned out. On top of that, Porsche typically doesn't have a strong lease program, which pushes me to to a simple optioned M4. Anyone else contemplating this??

I don't need 4 seats and still pick an M4 over a Cayman GTS as my daily driver!
The Cayman GTS is a superb handling car, but will leave you hungry for more power & torque... |

Actually, no it won't. Been there with turbo torque on several past cars, including 500+ lb ft. I'll take a high revving screamer every time while they still exist. Even my 987 CS didn't have me longing for more power. Having to wind it out was part of the fun.

Cayman GT(X) should fix that. Rumors of about 400hp. I'd take it over any 911 except a 991 GT3RS. |

+1…a cayman S is fast car. Anything 300hp and up is more than enough for the street and especially when its only 3100 lbs as the cayman S is. It will also dust everything short of a GT3 or 458 on a windy road and will do the same on the track as they are so easy to push and at the limit are planted and very easy to control.

Having come from a GT3 and a heavily modified 987 Cayman R, and having recently driven the new Cayman S on road & track, I have to admit, the Cayman's are strong performers, but have their short comings: stock brakes and suspension set up needs upgrading to get the most out of the handling. Performance and engine capacity is clearly held back by Porsche vs. the 911. Once you add the options, pricing on the Cayman GTS is over the top high and very close to the 911.
Even with a heavily modified Cayman R or stock Cayman S, you still have to wind the car up to high rpm's to get strong acceleration and by this point you're way over the speed limit...this car needs 400+hp for me to consider it again. Looking forward to feeling the low down torque and everyday usability of an M4. Hopefully, I won't be disappointed with the switch! |
