Idrive 6 lite/apple carplay

I’ve searched and couldn’t find an answer to my question.

I have a 2017 f80. Coded idrive 6 lite just now. I also had apple CarPlay from the factory. On idrive 5 there would be a small CarPlay logo on the home screen on the bottom left corner. This would allow me to access CarPlay pretty quickly.

After coding idrive 6 lite I noticed that the CarPlay shortcut is no longer there. Anyone else experiencing this too?

It’s a minor inconvenience, but apple CarPlay still works...just no quick access anymore.

I believe you need to flash your head unit to a later version to get it back

Might be worth double checking your coding settings on HU_NBT:

- CARPLAY_SWT = aktiv
- A4A_SWT = aktiv
- A4A_XL = nicht_aktiv
- A4A_KML = nicht_aktiv

I agree, you might want to check your coding. I have a 2017 ZCP that came with CarPlay and ID5. When I coded it to ID6 Lite, the little CarPlay symbol (triangle with a circle around it) was still in the lower left corner of the main ID6 screen.

All I have to do is use the idrive controller to highlight it, and then I can get into the CarPlay menu. Also, when I coded ID6 light on, I did not touch anything involving CarPlay as my car had it from the factory.

I have been running with CarPlay off for a while. I just turned it back on to test and the symbol was still in the lower left corner like I described above. See pics...

I’ll go and check it out. I basically just turned the id6 lite on. Will follow up to see if this does the trick.


I’m a newb when it comes to this stuff. Just using BimmerCode app to do the coding.

Ok so I checked the settings. Everything matches your codes...still no shortcut menu on home screen. My car was built October 2016 if that matters.

If you have not done so already, try turning off CarPlay in iDrive, then back on again, to include completely deleting your phone. That may help. CarPlay functionality has acted "squirley" in my car in the past with other functionality. Turning it off/on in iDrive has helped in the past.

If your car came with CarPlay from the factory AND you coded ID6 lite correctly, which does not involve changing any CarPlay parameters, then it should work just as I showed in the pics. While not unprecedented, I would be really surprised if BMW made a software change that affects this functionality between our build dates.

My car has a build date of November 2016.

I have coded my car using both ESys and BimmerCode so I don't know what the problem could be since our cars should be identical from a software perspective. In fact, I used BimmerCode to re-code my entire car (other than a few items BimmerCode could not do) after a recent dealer visit when the dealer updated the software in my car.

The only other thing that I think you could try is to have your car's software updated at the dealer as maybe there is a "bug" fix in the new software. This will wipe out all of your coding, but you can start from scratch, coding ID6 Lite first.

How do I know which version I have? Or maybe a better question...how to I update the firmware? Dealer the best option? Or can this be remotely done?

If you (or someone you know) has access to E-Sys (used for coding) or ISTA (used for factory BMW maintenance procedures), you can find out your "I-Step" which is the software version installed in your car. This can be remotely done if you were to get your car coded by a remote coder.

To update your firmware, the dealer is the easiest option. But getting the dealer to pay for it will be hit or miss. Typically, if you have some type of problem that can be fixed with a firmware update, the dealer will do it under a warranty repair. Otherwise, if you just ask for it you will most likely have to pay for it. For example, I was having issues with my Navigation maps not updating properly via the Over-the Air (OTA) process. I asked my dealer to just manually update my maps to the latest ones. During their troubleshooting, they elected to update my firmware to solve the OTA problem (which updates all ECUs in the car, not just the one associated with the navigation system). So I got it done for free in my case.

ahh maybe that's the difference between my version and yours (same model hear and nearly same build date)..I've never had any of the firmware updated.

Possibly.. But I actually coded my car to ID 6 Lite several months before the dealer updated my car's firmware. After I turned on ID 6 Lite, I played around with CarPlay for a bit (and I still had the CarPlay symbol in the lower left corner as pictured above) but then turned it off as I did not like the CarPlay user experience. So in other words, CarPlay worked properly with ID 6 Lite even before my software update.

That said, from a troubleshooting perspective, I still think that updating your car to the latest firmware is a good thing to do to help solve your issue. One other potential cause for the problem could be BimmerCode. BimmerCode, just like E-Sys (the PC coding software) must be kept up to date in order to properly code some of the features. This is one of the reasons BimmerCode will have periodic updates that says "to update coding data". I am far from an expert with BimmerCode or E-Sys, but this is my very basic understanding of how the coding software works.

The only other piece of advice I can think to give you is to restore all of your coding in your car back to "factory defaults" and start from scratch. Not exactly sure how to do this with BimmerCode (but I think it can be done) as the few times I have done it I have used E-Sys.

Anyone managed to find a solution with this.

I have one X3- F25 2017 with NBT Evo Id5 and I coded to ID6 lite. Carplay shortcut also is missing .

Any suggestion other than version which I have the latest too.

Probably software in headunit is too old.
Happend to me, and worked after software update.
