Want an M2, might settle for an M4

Hey guys, been searching for over a month now for an M2 in my budget. Seems that everyone I find with my preferred spec is either priced too high. Tired of waiting. M4 market is flooded and you can get a same or lower mile M4 for less then an M2 so I might just bite the bullet and grab one of these.

Got some basic questions if you guys wouldnt mind. How much faster is the S55 vs N55 in the M2 (assuming both are FBO stage 2). Off the line and to ~80mph ive heard they would be pretty much the same, but after that the M2 would start running out of breath while the S55 would keep on pulling. This sound about right? And what numbers does an S55 usually see with FBO stage 2 Bm3 tune?

And how is the reliability / common issues with the S55? Id be buying a car with >30k miles and keeping it for 3-4 years. My car will see about 10-13k hard miles a year. Are there any common (expensive) repairs that could happen in this span of time?

Thanks guys.

No kidding. The M4 is superior in every way. How much faster is it? Quite a bit, with a lot more potential. Do your research, there is a lot of info on this forum. You will see the S55 is actually very reliable, but as enthusiasts the priority is in taking care and staying on top of maintenance.

I also was in the run for an M2, but here is what I didn't liked compared to an M4:
- N55 engine is not a fully M engine and less potential then the S55
- M2 basicly is an uprated 2 series, interior is quite the same like a normal 2 series, seats etc...
- Back seats are really small (especially if you have a child)

So i ended up with an M4 ZCP :P

"Settle" for M4, haha.

No judgments here. You like what you like, but really? Settle? Not the word I would have used.

In all seriousness though, don't put a metaphorical gun to your head for a car you don't 100% want. It'll eat at you, and you'll spend more money getting rid of it for the car you really want. Just wait it out - it's a car, not medication.

The title of this thread completely threw me. The M2 is not the goods, I promise you. I also wasn’t all that impressed with the M2C. Just get yourself an M4 and be done with it.

The title was clearly a joke lol. I did that to make it more attention grabbing

My goal is to use it for autocross pretty often and track every few months. So the more nimble M2 as my top choice. My only concern is that the M4 will feel way heavier even tho its roughly the same weight. As a side note, I will be removing ~150 pounds of weight from the car and throwing on KW V2's and EC7's. Just wondering how the 2 different cars will feel

The speed is definitely a factor pulling me into a buying an M4. The only thing that pushes me away is the difference in handling capabilities. Ive been told by several people that even tho they weigh almost the same the M4 feels like a "boat" compared to the M2.

Budget is well below invoice on a new M2c. Dont want to spend that much on a car currently. Thank you for the offer however

If both the n55 and s55 are stage 2 with downpipes, there is no comparison. The s55 will pull much harder and the potential for more power is also there. I love the way the n55 sounds, but it just doesn't stack up to the s55 in terms of performance...especially up top.

I looked for an n55 m2 before my f80 and it left a lot to be desired, especially when you can get an overall nicer car, with more power, for less. If you're looking for 500whp or more, you already know the right choice. If you want something smaller, more nimble, with less power, then wait to find your perfect m2.

Both are great cars. The M4 is faster and has a more potent engine. The key benefit I felt with the M2 is that it is just the right size. To me that made a BIG difference. However, I bought the M3 because I have need for 4 doors because of the kids.

If it were just me and the Mrs, I would have gone ahead with the M2. Hope this helps.

2015 or 2016 M4s have to be one of the best deals out there right now. You're getting what is basically still BMWs current model for the series, incredible looks, a big cabin with plenty of room, some real storage space, and absolutely fantastic performance. They are also proving to be tremendously reliable, but it's still always a gamble with ///M cars out of warranty (though with the M4 I'd feel more comfortable owning out of warranty than any other ///M car).

I don't see how the hell you can go wrong buying one. I've owned mine for a couple years now and still love every single drive I take in it, no matter how short.

Doubt thats the case. If you're used to a small car and then drive the M4 it will probably feel bigger because it is; but not a boat. I had a 135i before my M4 and the M4 made the 135i (with M3 control arms and coilovers) seem sloppy in corners.

Unless youre pretty well off or are one of those people who would "never" tune their car, the CSL is garbage. way too overpriced. You can pick up a new or used M2C, throw on some proper racing wheels, top tier suspension, tune, bolt on, invest a few thousand into weigh reduction and itll smoke a CSL.
