Buying a 2019 M4 out of state with no warranty
So I've been searching and I found a 2019 M4 with 6k miles, 1 owner, clean carfax and sold by a BMW dealership, but there's a few things:
- There's no warranty on the car, it's marked as CPO but when I called they told me the CPO warranty ran out a few days ago (which I'm confused about a bit, how that's possible if it just went for sale a few days ago) - It's out of state and I would buy and ship it sight unseen - No return/refund, the car is as is Should I be worried if I were to pull the trigger? I feel like a car with 6k miles and 1 owner shouldn't have any issues but wanted to get everyone's thoughts on it as this would be my first ever BMW/M car |

The S55 engine is very solid you should not having any major problem beside it's only had 6K miles.

Pay the $300 to have a local company or shop do a PPI. At 6k miles there is little mechanically that could be wrong, but there could be cosmetic issues. Have the dealer provide service history, which at this point should be the initial 1500 break in service and maybe an oil change. You can score an aftermarket warranty for piece of mind, there’s even a dude on here that sells them.

Car looks great from the pictures I saw. Sales guy I was speaking to said they bought it from the owner who was a doctor and the car was garage kept (not sure how reliable that info is lol but relaying what I was told)

If it was being marketed as CPO and now not then it should be like $8k less.... after the original warranty expires it can't be CPO'd. Perhaps they had it listed incorrectly as CPO but if they were planning to CPO it there should be a CPO checklist they prolly won't show you if you asked and if they really completed the CPO inspection then I wouldn't worry so much. CPO cars are becoming rare as many dealers shy from the program cause it's too exp and hard to sell. My first M4 was CPO back in 2019, but on the second they said it's cheaper for me to buy a BMW warranty at signing, which I got them to throw in 1 yr for free.

I'm definitely going to ask for the inspection report considering they're marketing it as CPO and telling me it's expired |

Yes, I would still get a PPI from a third party.

According to the carfax when did it leave the lot new, more likely it's been just 4 yrs and can't be CPO'd. Only possible way is original owner leased it, bought it out via the dealer and had them CPO it at the time. That would make it 5yrs from when it rolled off the lot. But in that scenario I believe carfax would not show it as 1 owner, but 2.

If it's the one, purchased Feb 2019, does not appear to first been a lease, 1 owner purchased vehicle, at 4yrs 10m old at time offered for sale it could not be CPO'd and it is not possible to CPO during ownership that I have ever heard. Only thing I could think of is they bought a BMW extended warranty but that would still be good for 2m if they added a year or more.

How far away is the dealership? If it’s a car I really want to buy, I would just go buy a plane ticket and see the vehicle myself (one way tix if the drive back could be done in a day). Having dealership state “no refunds, as is” there could be some annoyance issues that might turn you off even where a PPI may not notice; such as a slight weird smell inside the vehicle from perhaps spilled milk in the backseat left for days or in the sun, or a squeal you have no idea where it’s coming from. Point is if it’s a high value vehicle purchase, a few hundred dollars for a plane ticket and a hotel room for the night could prevent future regrets. Good luck.

I find it shady that a BMW dealer would list a car as a CPO when it is not a CPO. I think that alone would make me not want to purchase a car from them. At a minimum, I'd get a PPI and push them hard on a price drop or adding a third party warranty equivalent to a CPO at no charge.

I’ve also been on the buyer end: I started working a deal on a CPO F30 335i that I had been in the market for back in the day. Same situation, car was a lease return from a repeat buyer of the Salesperson, he called me before the car ever hit the lot. Arrive at the dealer and the salesman has to tell me that they can’t actually CPO the car because the PO added in an aftermarket amp. It took some back and forth, but arrived at a price I liked with them throwing in a compatible aftermarket warranty. Stuff happens. So long as it was some honest mistake or a technicality, I would just negotiate a better deal. If they are being shady or playing games, move on. |

I am personally skeptical of these CPO programs because I traded in a car (Audi) with significant damage from an accident that was later CPO'd after a dealer in Atlanta bought it at auction. I looked into it and found the manufacturers do not exclude cars in accidents from being CPO'd unless there is frame damage. So to me, the bar is not very high for a car to be CPO'd. If they can't clear it before listing it as a CPO (including figuring out the warranty expired), that is shady in my book. (And if I were buying used, CPO or otherwise, I would definitely get a PPI.)
