+1

The only nock I see on the upcoming engine is that I think the turbos will keep it out of a lot or racing series. Correct me if I am wrong though.

very disappointing it wont get full carbon fiber treatment, I remember when that was implied. I am not surprised, but still disappointed.

Do you usually come to conclusions about cars before driving them? Have you driven the new M3 extensively enough to state this? If not, your argument is invalid.

I hope they throw that electric turbo in there because after driving the N55... I can honestly say there is a noticeable lag.

The brakes look promising and large enough to be about 380 mm front and 355 mm rear behind those 19" wheels.

Agreed on the fact that in the past, M engines are based on "vanilla" engines. But historically they have always been extensively modified, with not much left in common with their vanilla counterpart. Hopefully BMW M will be doing the same thing here and not a carry over like they did in the 1M. IMO, an ///M engine should have the soul of Motorsport, that is what ///M stands for.

And to take that a little further, the S65 is a derivation of the S85, so there you have it, the only true M engine is an S85, booya!

3-man team. One to rip off cover, one for photo's and one in the getaway car. M3 of course, better make it a 6-spd so oyu know it's someone who can drive it right.

All the 1,2,3,4,5,6, and 7 series will use a combination of these 3 engines. What happened to those days of actually DESIGNING special engines for the cars?

BMW, you are getting lazy and you should not take your reputation for granted or you will pay the price. Your PR rep guy (Scott or whoever is leaking the info) is doing an absolutely horrible job at saying things like "it's a heavily reworked version of N55" engine, which is THE engine M3 owners simply HATE as it takes a $500 tune to make it go faster than the S65 straight line. I mean come on, really? Can Germans not think at all? At least say "a brand new inline 6 with a unique turbo design", that at least gives the M3 the "uniqueness" aspect of things which so far it has always kept for every production cycle. This car is the only car where M3 is REUSING core things like engine or steering from the PREVIOUS (yes that's right, it's not like they redesigned N55 for F30) generation.

The most important thing when it comes to the success of consumer products in any category is PERCEPTION. It's very simple. You say its a reworked N55 engine, people will think it IS the N55 engine. You say its an entirely new 6 cylinder even though you stole the design of N55, who will care? Will someone hire a private investigator and prove you wrong? You never ever make people not feel special for owning an M3. That's the key thing.

I really am not one of those people who has said "oh let me get my hands on to this amazing last NA V8 BMW made before it sold out", I adapt and I like change, but these are changes in the WRONG direction.

There is something seriously wrong with the higher management in BMW, probably some Hans who only cares about maximum profit is making the calls without worrying about the meaning of the brand.

And I have one more thing to add. Whoever is the admin to this site is or whoever maintains the m3post <-> BMW relationships (Scott?) please make sure this is a two way street, as in, whatever info comes out is fine, but make sure our feedback is also heard.

Thanks.
Haha your argument makes me smile because there is a lot more to it than what your complaining about. For starters as it has been stated before, all ///M engines are usually based on current BMW engines. E30, E36, E46, etc. Only the E9X was based on the V10 but nonetheless it was a "current" engine. Do you not realize how much $$$$ it takes to develop an entire engine from the ground up. You're talking millions up millions thus, it is not economically feasible for BMW to make an engine for each individual series. If they did that, they would have to charge around $125k for an ///M3 in the US along to stay profitable (Not to mention the rest of the world). Yes we need for BMW to be as profitable as possible to continue paying for the development of some of the world's best vehicles. So there you have it my friend, you only drive an ///M3. If you want pure emotional engine "exclusivity," buy a Ferrari

What I'm finding more and more about these spy/leak/info threads is people care way too much about the specifics of not being it's own rather than the final product. If we learned anything about the 1M, it's that regardless of what BMW decides to put in a car, it can still be an excellent car.

(And for crying out loud, BMW isn't an exclusive marque like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati. Stop thinking BMW needs to do this and that to keep up perception. They're just a regular/mass luxury brand. That is all. LOL)

no doubt this is the f80 or f82 prototype... the wheels, tires...
H/w that doesn't mean it's concept-ready or show-ready underneath, it could just be one of those preproduction mules with a little more engineering for those execs to scrutinize.

While I agree with the novelty of a dedicated M engine, it is not economical to do so. And honestly even the majority of M buyers, will not even care about the letters (N55, N54 etc) of their engine they buy! This web community are the rare enthusiasts, a small portion of end buyers. The average M customer wont even ask this upon purchase the engine serial number, and the dealer is not going to get that technical. The majority of buyers care about HP, exterior and interior looks, and the test drive

I'm quite pleased with my N55 motor with a Dinan Stage 2 tune. I'd personally Love to see a higher performance version of this wonderful inline six. Just keep a 6MT an option & I'm your target customer BMW.
