What did you mess up, by working on your own car?
Just installed my Turner skid plate for the oil cooler. I got almost all the way done and the front bumper panel screws wouldn't go in. Found it odd. Took it all back apart thinking it wasn't lined up correctly. Put it all back together snug. Same thing. Front screws just spinning.
Then in occurs to me. It must be missing clips. I'm about to call Turner when naturally I look over at the original and it has the clips I'm OBVIOUSLY supposed to have swapped over. I'll be reinstalling that in the am and sub 90° temps lol. What things have you messed up/installed incorrectly? Don't lie you know you've done it.

Front bumper foam when replacing the heat exchanger. I had no idea that it attached via sliding tabs and borked them up pretty good wrestling them off. They're still borked to this day, but the bumper covers up the problem so technically it doesn't exist.
My best was cross threading a header bolt on my old Ram 1500. I didn't realize the issue until the bolt was halfway into the aluminum head, so I jerry rigged it with about 6 washers to secure it in place so I wouldn't damage the threads any further. I'm sure that I've had "extra" bolts left over after other installs too, but that just equates to weight savings so it doesn't really count

I broke a few rear bumper tabs off my e90 when I wrapped the car. Also I installed an active autowerks race header on my 330i and installed their tune. The car was just annoyingly loud and lost way more torque than it gained hp. I regretted both mods the instant I was done with them. I knew they both made the car worse. Sold the car shortly after.

Swapping brake pads for the fist time in the M4. Had an oddly hard time getting the caliper bolts back in to one of the calipers. Thought "why the f is this so hard?".
Stuck my head under to check if the pads were seated correctly and noticed the inner bake pad was back-to-front, as in the backing plate was against the rotor. This is why you always double or triple check your work! That wouldn't have been pretty if I drove it. |

I was changing plugs and was mostly done...then I saw the black wire sitting on the TMIC (means back engine cover missing)...off came both braces again.
Or the time I did a whole plug job and 1 plug was cracked...since I didn't inspect new parts I did the job twice in a row! ...or when I forgot a v-band bolt! I still love working on my car.

When I was 16 I bought a set of huge speakers for the station wagon I was given to drive. There was no template to use to cut out and mount the speakers. A friend and I used a sawzall and started cutting, and the holes we made were way too big. I took some wood and screwed it behind the holes to mount the speakers too. Looked terrible and sounded terrible. But the real question was why did the interior lights come on when I used the brakes after the install lol.

stripped spark plug threads in a block once while changing spark plugs with my dad as a teenager. What should have saved us $100, costed us like $350 more and two days without a car cause we had to get a specialist to come and recut the threads.
now i get PTSD anytime i think about doing plugs... its the one job i always fork the cash out for. |

Broke one side of the breather tube clip rushing to install my MST intakes bc I thought I was gonna be late for a haircut smh.
It was actually funny bc I wound up only getting one in and left the other stock, went and got my haircut then swapped the other when I got back home. Shoulda just waited til after or the next day but I'm extremely impatient. |

Stripped a spark plug thread in the head of a built RB26 in an Nissan S2 Autech 260RS Stagea, very rare car, like a GTR Volvo.
That was a costly mistake...

Cracked my front lip again by rushing to work and park to curb too close. Time to replace the unit this time. But lightweight lips are backlogged.
All I heard was crunch on the oem lips, it was already held up by drywall screws. |

I just sold a car with a cracked lip! Z06 Vette for what I paid for it.
Priced it low enough that it wasn’t a bargaining point.

Ohhh this is a good one. Had a jack come crashing down on my first car, 1 wheel off, no jack stands. Luckily had just stepped away from the car. Learned a lesson QUICK after that incident.
Now I jack up with quick jacks + jack stands as fail safe + rhino ramps / wheels under car for good measure before even thinking of going in. |
