Track data: Both OBD2 and ext GPS to iPhone via BT?

Hey guys,

As I'm doing more track events, I'm looking to dip into datalogging. At my last event I used just RaceChrono on my iPhone for lap times. In taking the next step for data collection, my question is do all the various external devices one needs simultaneously connect to an iPhone via bluetooth?

I'm looking to get Dual XGPS160 for GPS, and OBDLink MX+ for car data (per RaceChrono's Support page). Will both these connect to my iPhone via BT and feed the data? It just seems a bit too good to be true to presume that this can all happen seamlessly. Also, I have CarPlay, which tends to throw a wrench in the works.

Can someone with more experience provide any advice? Will I need to turn off CarPlay to get everything to play nice?

Thanks!
~J

On my Iphone8 using Harry’s LapTimer the Dual XPGS160 works well. I usually place the GPS in the center console with my phone.

My phone is Velcro’d down.

Coincidentally I went with a similar setup for the first time a few weeks ago at the track with a XGPS150A and a Veepeak OBDCheck BLE. I also run a GoPro through wifi and I used RaceChrono. At the last second before my first lap I had problems connecting both the GPS and the OBDCheck at the same time. Luckily my iphone's GPS was sufficient and I used that the rest of the day.

HOWEVER, I tried again last night in my garage and it worked! I TURNED OFF CARPLAY through the iPhone settings because I was also coding. I believe I only turned off CARPLAY through the iDrive at the track. So perhaps that is the culprit.

Time permitting, I'll do another test sometime this week with carplay on to see if that was the cause, but at least it worked last night.

You have to turn off carplay in order for it to work!! I personally just disconnect the phone from the car while I'm using it for data logging.

If you're running Limerock with SCDA, I can show you how to get it to work.

Thanks all... I received my two devices yesterday, and last PM just in the garage got everything hooked up. It did appear that both OBD2 and GPS connected to my iPhone at the same time without issue, and both recognized to toggle on in RaceChrono Setting screen.... and that was without me turning off CarPlay. But good tip on just turning CarPlay off to be safe, will give that a go this weekend (anyone else going to NJMP Lightning with NNJR PCA?)

CarPlay is too unpredictable. I didn't even know it was a wifi connection until I started having problems with the GPS, GoPro and OBD devices. I might add that I'm running iOS 13.1.2 which changes the CapPlay behavior on the phone. Carplay no longer takes control of the screen when going between apps in CarPlay.

What will happen is when you go into RaceChrono you'll occasionally get random disconnects with CarPlay on. Last thing you want is a hiccup on a hotlap.

Common things I experience with their solutions:

1) OBD Reader not connection.

Solution: General Settings, reconnect it in the bluetooth settings.

2) XGPS not reading.

Solution: Same as OBD reader, if it still doesn't work then open SkyPro app to make sure there's a connection.

3) GoPro not reading.

Solution: I have no idea, I actually kind of gave up on this one and now I just record the GoPro separately and link the video once I'm done. I'm mainly chasing the XGPS and OBD data. The video is nice though.
