Hesitant to tune?

Hey guys, new to F80 forum and this is my first M3 in the last 10 years. The S55 is all new to me. I just bought a 2018 ZCP DCT alpine white F80 with 1450 miles on it and I am absolutely in love with it! I came from all Renntech tuned AMG's, and a 991.1 C2S Porsche in the middle. (AMG GT, E63S, C63S and currently still a 14 SL65) I am guessing my reluctancy to tune the car is because I am not familiar with it. I am reading the Bootmod3 seams to be incredibly popular as well as the JB4 obviously but I decided to go with DME tuning out of New Jersey as they have been doing a ton of my friends 720 and 570 Mclarens here in south Florida. Anyone else running a DME tune and what stage? Thanks in advance guys!

I’ve been running DMEtuning’s stage 3 tune for almost 2 years now. Phenomenal amount of power without a single issue. The delivery is very smooth from idle to redline.

Awesome! Thank you so much! That's all I needed to hear! What other mods have you done to yours?

Full Active Autowerke exhaust, VRSF DP’s, and Eventuri intake. It all works well together.

Search Spun crank hub (SCH) and it will make you not want to mess with the ECU. I know it has for me because all of my last 5 bmw's were tuned but not my M3

Sadly for me as well. SCH is also the sole reason I just purchased an extended warranty for the car too at great cost. These things are fast enough as it is anyway.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much it cost to build one of these S55's if I wipe
One out?

Well a lot of variables there. SCH doesn't always grenade the motor, but I think to make things right the fix is in the $5-6k range. If you do wind up blowing the motor, you could range from $12-15k+ or so for a used donor plus labor to $25k+ for a whole new unit. My memory fails me, but I think I remember seeing a forum member whose motor blew due to SCH, and even though BMW warrantied the repair he posted a bill for like $28k or something insane.

To me, no tune + extended warranty was worth it for peace of mind. Likely nothing will happen due to the proven strong reliability of these cars, but I just can't get enough of paying for services which I'll likely never use.

Cost me just under 30k...Just know what you're getting yourself into. Will it happen to you? Who knows, basically a coin toss. I can happen to both stock and tuned engines.

Coin toss implies 50 50 chance. Maybe wrong expression.
It's not half of cars. Bmw would have issued a bulletin.
From what I read its very low.
Some bmw techs on here say they've never seen one at their dealership
Seems to correlate with very high hp and tq
I think up to CS or GTS levels implies fairly safe levels since it's with bmw spec.

My Car 2015 F83 has had DME STG3 for about 2years with no issues at all. I tuned when I had about 18k on the clock and now I'm up to 45K so reliability of this tune is great though I also change my oil every 3k miles and I do spark plugs every 15k miles. Though my car is very heavy in comparison to the F80 & F82 I have no problem hanging with those cars unless they are FULL E85 Tuned which do pull on me. Either way I highly recommend DME TUNNING. @FatRear08 we should meet up sometime to test out the differences between our cars as I live in NJ too.

you guys have to understand there are two types of people who get tunes..

1. PURE TURBO RUNNING ON LIQUID HYDROGEN REAR SEAT DELTE; DRIVER DELETE; BREAKFEST DELTETE

2. and some guys that wanted burbbles and slightly better power delivery on thier civics.

1. always going to have engine problems because they abuse their cars; and have questionable driving habits at least from an engine maintenance perspective.

2. likely never redline; floor it once to show off/scare the car passengers and its over; back to a conference call or taking their daughters to chik fil-a

a tune alone is not going to spin your crank hub. no evidence just hysterics.

my sisters N20 just blew a head gasket....i doubt the car has exceeded 4k rpms much... and I dont think thats the end of the repairs.

Not even so much on the tune....but you buy a BMW you gotta know this

While a aftermarket tune doesn't automatically mean you will have a SCH, it does however mean if it does happen you are paying out of your own pocket to fix it. Thats the difference and the chance you are taking. Up to the individual to decide if having that extra power is worth it.

I'm in the camp where I did the tune for the aesthetics.

After I found out about the SCH, I went from BM3 stage 1 to the standard OTS maps and I've been happy with them.

Happily, I identify with #2. I do track the car though, but I wanted burbles, more power, etc. I would never consider going catless (the smell of fumes is disgusting and i have an infant son (not daughter).

The % of cars with a confirmed SCH is so low it is not really worth worrying about. Also, some (not many but some) people who had a SCH with a tune were able to get BMWNA to cover most of the repair cost.

Anyone have any experience with GEICO MBI? I identify 100% with #2 above. I just really want burbles!! Don't want to tune my civic f80 because it's my DD and if anything ever happens to it and I need to pay out of pocket....I'll be walking everywhere for the rest of my life lol (and I'm financing the car)

I have GEICO MBI on my policy. IF for some reason I tune with BM3 and something goes wrong and my warranty gets voided, will GEICO cover the repair?

I have it on my policy as well. Luckily no experience with it as of yet but I hear nothing but good things about it. I feel like we should be good (fingers crossed). I just crossed the threshold of the warranty expiring, so we shall see.

No warranty is going to cover it....there will never be an consolations. you pay to play. its that simple...i for one decided; that no point of owning this car without burbles...

im spoiled tho and have aa+remus...so burbbles or not shit still sounds good. but unfortunately time is more valuable than money. so if shit happens...it happens

What about #3:

- thinks burbles are stupid and wants to disable them
- wants a little more top end power because he actually drives his car and redlines it regularly and wants to replicate his S54 and S65 experiences
