Dyno Results K&N Panel Filters

After the baseline I installed the panel filters w/charcoal panel delete and went back to the dyno after about 300 miles.

91 oct, 5th gear, dynojet.

Blue: Baseline is stock. Only catch can installed.
Red: K&N filter and charcoal delete.

Looks pretty good to me. 10whp down low, 20 at the midrange and 5 near redline. Torque gains even more except top is about the same 5wtq.

I can hear the turbo spool up a little more in sport +.

Thanks for taking the time to dyno the drop-in filters.

Your results mirrored my butt dyno when I did the K&N drop-ins recently.

Last year I installed BMC drop-in filters and felt a substantial loss in power everywhere. My thread here

I decided to switch immediately back to the stock filters and decided to stay with them until last month. I was still curious about drop-ins because I planned on going to an E30 tune, I thought let's give K&N a try since I had a good experience with them on my E92 M3.

After installing the K&N drop-ins last month, it was a nice improvement over stock, the car just felt more responsive, mid-range felt like it picked up a good amount. Glad to see the data to confirm my suspicion.

I initially bought the BMC filters because of recommendations from a few forums members and vendors, hey if it comes stock on a GT3 than it should be good enough for the S55 was my thought.

From my experience, BMC filters do not work well on the F8x, I felt a power loss and sluggish throttle response. K&Ns on my car seems to work amazingly well, even better than the stock filters which I thought was the best setup until recently.

Thanks for posting. Did you do the test on the same dyno at the same temperature or is correction factor done on these runs?

There was a 20* difference in ambient temps so your K&n graph would have made even more power if it was 73* ambient like the baseline.

Well if you look closely it has a 1.05 correction factor on the hotter run.

Sure, no problem! Any change I make I always dyno. lol

Interesting regarding the BMC filters. Should be basically the same thing as K&N, no?

I hardly drive the car so it's hard for me to gauge the feel afterwards, but it did seem like it was pulling harder as I got to 6k. Along with much lighter wheels on the car, it just jumps. The change in wheel setup I could feel immediately. I have K&N in my other 2 cars and have benefited them also. Seems more so in the M3.

Same dyno, but different months. I don't drive it much so it took a while to put on the mileage and also trying to get into the shop's schedule. lol

Correct. The IAT on the first run was 100 and IIRC the second run was 120? So, yeah, I'm guessing if it were about the same temp it would have been more powerful.

How does that translate if you want to normalize the measurements?

Ideally, it would be to show the uncorrected results, if you have them available.

Good data showing the gains from filters/charcoal delete.

K&Ns are ok, but the build quality of the BMCs are much better (especially in the filtering and wick/bleed area). I'll try to locate a set of K&Ns and do a comparison sometime soon.

I haven’t looked, but I have them in my DD and Lotus and never had an issue with the MAFs over several cleanings and re-oiling.

what are the engine risks of running K&N type filter? you need to spray them right, wash frequently etc?

Thanks for taking the time of doing this and sharing the results .

I wonder how much comes from the K&N and how much comes from the charcoal filter removal.

Nothing other than maybe letting them get too dirty and over oiling when it’s time to refresh the filter(s). Oil can get onto the MAF from over oiling and cause it to measure incorrectly. I haven’t had an issue with either. Some cars’ filter will get dirtier faster, so it’s a good idea to check from time to time. The Lotus I have to clean every 3k miles. The DD is about 7500, IIRC. M3 I have no idea yet. I only have 1700 miles on the car. lmao

You’re welcome.

That’s an interesting question. If I had the time, I could have done it. I’m trying to remember how thick the fibers on the charcoal filter are. My guess would be maybe a third or half of the gains?

I heard it was the opposite. BMC > K&N and there is multiple threads about this?

Can someone pls confirm?

From what I’ve read and seen, there’s almost no difference between stock filters without the charcoal and a “performance” filter without the charcoal.

Atleast on his Subaru. Every car is differently designed so a comparison must be made on aF8X car to be able to see the true effect.
