More 2014 BMW M3 F80 Videos: 3 Minutes Blasting On and Around Nurburgring

COMMENTS

The 2014 F80 M3 continues prototype testing on the road and track on and around the Nurburgring. We've compiled this 3 minute video featuring plenty of new sights and sounds of the F80 M3 in various settings performing different maneuvers and driving action.

With its planted ride and suspension, together with plenty of power from its turbo inline 6 cylinder, the new M3 flies around the track with little body roll and suspension travel.

To reiterate our oft repeated details on the upcoming F80 M3 / F82 M4:

The F80 M3 / F82 M4 will be powered by an inline 6 cylinder engine with multiple turbochargers, pushing approximately 450 horsepower. The engine has been rumored to be an extensively reworked and reinforced N55 6-cylinder engine with a strengthened aluminium block with a heavily modified cylinder head. The Induction technology is said to be completely new as will be the latest bi-vanos variable valve timing. But, we also think there may be a possibility that the engine turns out to be a reworked/enhanced version of a successor engine to the N55 (which has not yet been introduced). Both a DCT and manual transmission will be available and both have been spotted on the prototypes. The blue brakes resemble the new 3 Series' M Sport brakes, paired with steel cross drilled rotors.

For more M3/M4 coverage see: http://www.bimmerpost.com/m3/f30m3/

The following is a summary what we know regarding the F80 M3 / F82 M4:
  • Lighter than current M3
  • Faster than current M3
  • More powerful than current M3
  • More efficient than current M3
  • Powered by an inline 6 cylinder turbo engine
  • Offered with optional or standard manual transmission
  • Electric Power Steering (completely reworked for precision for M3/M4)
  • Tires (from prototype) - Michelin Pilot Super Sport: 255/35/19 (front), 275/35/19 (rear)
  • Front styling to feature elements from the M6 and 1M coupe, with Air Curtain technology (our render)
  • Hood to feature power/vent bump
  • M3 Introduced late 2013 - early 2014 (concept debuts earlier)
  • M4 Introduced no earlier than late 2014

Great video, thanks Jason.

Sounds decent though, if this is a DCT, it doesn't seem to rev match. Maybe like the new F10 M5tt it won't. Corners flat, torque seems to overwhelm the rear tires at will. Wonder whether they'll up them to 285s.

Glad you liked the video

The tires spotted on the prototype have been:

Michelin Pilot Super Sport: 255/35/19 (front), 275/35/19 (rear)

Front Tires - Michelin Pilot Super Sport 255/35/19

Rear Tires - Michelin Pilot Super Sport 275/35/19

Right, not all the prototypes have it. The earlier ones all did not.

Wow, that's great info re the tires. Thanks again. That extra 10mm should help out for sure and also improve the rear stance even further. I'm thinking 19s may be the standard fitment. Plenty big enough, while I like to load up, I won't opt for 20s if they offer them.

The car looks great!

As far as looks are concerned BMW is headed in the right direction with the M3 (and the M5 as well). I'm not a C. Bangle design fan, especially on the 5er.

It sounds mean in the last 10 seconds. But is it normal to get these pops when shifting?

One thing is for sure...this car loves to fart
Anyway, I must admit that I am very eager to see this car out on sale so I can get my hands on it. I love the way it sounds and I love the car's stance.

Many people say that downsizing from the mighty V8 to a turbocharged l6 will affect the sound but as far as I hear it in the vids...the sound is quite good actually. And let us not forget that there are lots of aftermarket companies that will create exhaust systems for this baby.

When we saw it at the ///M Studio in Munich last week the mule had a hood budge. No sign of an exposed opening for extracting heat from the back of the budge, but the hood def. had a bump in it.

Dammmm. It's STUCK to the ground!

The fender flares made me drool

And it sounds a lot like the 1M but does have a nice growl at low-rpm. I really liked how it sounded when it was behind the truck. That's one thing I like about my E46 M3 is the low RPM growl it has even though in some situations it can be somewhat quiet

When it was pulling into the driveway at the end... it did sound very Honda fart-can esque... What i mean is that it sounds somewhat generic. But i do like the volume I just feel like they need to tune the noise itself to be more distinct.

I'm not sure if the same car was used thru the whole video but you can hear that pop every time the M/T shifts. It's definitely a M/T because my SMG doesn't even take that long to shift in S4.

Lastly it has a great idle rumble. Definitely louder than any stock E46 or E9x I've seen.

Looks pretty good!

At 2:40 there's some major rattling going on. I wonder if something broke. Then the driver presses throttle up the ramp and wow, it sounds mean!

Wow, those drifts look nice. The relatively long genesis for the M3 suggests to me that the engine is based on a successor to the N55. Otherwise, I think the New M3 could be available earlier. I have a feeling the change in the top end will be cylinder deactivation, but that is a wild guess based on the idea that just about every other fuel saving technology short of hybrid electric is already there. I also wonder if the DCT will have a real overdrive gear to improve highway efficiency. I realize that M3 buyers don't care much about fuel efficiency, but the M3 will be averaged in with other cars its size and these averages are getting increasingly harder to meet.

There will be some news about the successor fairly soon if sources are to be believed- The M5 introduced the tü, and the M3 is said to something similar.

Sounds great! Nice videos Jason. I hope BMW doesn't make the same mistakes that they did with the M5. The fake exhaust sound must go and this EPS...I hate to see BMW gambling with M3's steering feeling. They already messed with the hydraulic steering of the M5 and didn't come out perfect.

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!
