Aaand the acoustic design of the car came from Yamaha which included them working on the noise from the engine, intake, cabin driver experience and the exhaust note. At least thats what ppl at Lexus HQ told me when we were staring at one in their parking lot.
And after some searching to help you confirm it you can find it on their Lexus-global.com site under innovation.

The new M3 exhaust note doesn't sound that much different than the Porsche 911 Turbo exhaust note

This is how most Turbo cars sound! If you don't like it, don't buy it. Oooor the Porsche for that matter since it sounds similar and it's over $120+k

No. Im pretty sure Yamaha was definitely commissioned to do the exhaust. The goal was to tune the exhaust note to be close to that of a Formula 1 race car.

See, there are some optimistic people here that are not really concerned about the exhaust. But for those who are complaining and would stick with their e9x m3, then don't come back complaining that you lost against the new m3.

I think the videos do not justify the sights and sound honestly. You have to be there to witness it in real life to understand about this new beast. Since, many of us do not have the privilege to actually go to Germany and, ofcourse, follow this new M3 around the city or on its way to the test track, we will never know how good it is or will be. We can only speculate from watching the videos and looking up at the pictures provided by the people who were blessed to have been there to witness it.

Yes to 210 the new M3 will pwn...

... Until it hits a brick wall

So streetlight to streetlight and on short courses the new one will win...

... Until clogged injectors and hpfp problems reveal themselves

But I'm sure the new one will be sick in its own regard

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that a turbocharged inline 6 isn't going to sound as good (to fans of N/A V8s) as the outgoing M3, or even the S54 powered E46 M3. You simply can't coerce those kinds of sounds out of a turbocharged engine when you have a turbine sitting in the exhaust flow. The natural effect of a turbine is to smooth out and muffle exhaust pulses, which results in a completely different characteristic.

No one is saying it won't perform better, but some people ask more of the experience. For me, how a car sounds is a big part of the overall experience of owning the car. As others have pointed out, you hear the car every day, but you only have the opportunity to extract maximum performance on a rare occasion.

BMW isn't alone in this challenge though. Turbocharging is the future of petrol powered cars. It's the only way to deliver big power, but also perform well on the government efficiency test cycles. Audi no longer puts a V8 in the S4 or S5 either. That's not going to stop us from lamenting the loss of good engine acoustics though.

Agreed. We need to adapt to newer standards of where the manufacturers are heading towards to. I already knew that any turbocharged engine in general will never sound like a naturally aspirated engine that we have been so accustomed to for many years. Not unless if you go aftermarket route to make it sound louder and meaner, but that's a whole different level. EPA and the government have kind of forced the manufacturers to develop more fuel efficient engines; hence, the reason why we are seeing smaller displacements, smaller engines with turbocharges. Otherwise, I think I am incline to say that the manufacturers would have had no interest in making greener cars, being more friendlier to the environment; not that they have any cruel intentions to the environment by the way. Anyways, we just need to move on. And, again, I don't think that exhaust sounds bad. You can still hear it from quite a distance as well as with a slight hint of turbo sounds and whistles which should boost up one's mood.

Wow looks very fast. It's going to be a very light and fast M3.

The exhaust sound is not the final product and they haven't added the final exhaust. If you follow other M spy videos, they never sound like the final product. I bet it's going to sound pretty good. Maybe like the E46 M3 raspy sound which I love.

It's called constructive criticism and we hope Scott and others are listening and passing back the info to the m development team

BMW says the 3GT was developed from listening to its customers desires

Some of us are Hoping to send a demand signal... Was the power bump initially included?

I'm really hoping there is a Dakar yellow like paint available on this as a standard choice.... Just keep the hexavalent chromium out of the water

Why Bmw don´t make M2 and M3 CSL version? Which have NA 3L-3.8L I6 engine whit magnesium block (easily 400bhp), only engine could be 40kg lighter than turbo engine. Price 15k€ higher than normal M-version and there it is, competor to Porsche Gt3.

So long as there's still a comfy comfort mode for the road then I'll be happy. I say this because with all the bumps and holes around here Comfort is the most confidence inspiring mode when pushing-on when not at the track. I had an S4 back in the day that was so stiff it would throw the car off line and your head into the headliner.

Overall, I'm looking forward to this car and excited to what advancements have been made. But yes, the exhaust needs a little more work. Anyhow, look forward to getting one and getting to the track to find out for myself.

Impressive speed on the ring. Good driving skill + a good car.

It's probably too early to judge the exhaust sound. The microphone on the v-cam may not be picking up the sound accurately. Gotta hear it in person to judge. But anyhow, that's why they have aftermarket exhausts. I thought the e92 M3 exhaust is weak too that's why I replace the stock exhaust with Borla (I got the S-type and not the touring as the S-type gives a more aggressive sound).
