Would you pick M3 over M4 (with a twist)?
If you never use rear doors, don't have kids or a family - would you get an M3 over the M4?
I agree with numerous other members that the new M3 looks better than the M4, but I just can't bring myself down to consider a 4 door car. The rear doors will end up fusing to the body from not ever being opened. Plus I would lose the large door opening of the coupe.

That argument is dumb.
I'm constrained because I need the back doors for utility... But I have a coupe right now, and I'm excited to 'give up' some door. My M3 is a daily driver and those long doors are a pain in the butt in many parking lots. Quite frankly, the short doors open wider in any given space. Plus - what do I need the extra door space for anyway? It's not like the sedan doors are too small to get in or something. |

I bought my first M3 at age 24. It was a 2004 coupe, since (obviously) there was no 4-door equivalent in e46.
In the 9 years of ownership, I also owned a 99 M3/4/5. It was a marvelous car. Simply put, I always preferred 4-door M3's over coupes. If the e46 M3 were made with 4 doors, I would absolutely own that and not the coupe. Luckily, IMO the e46 M3 was the second best looking M3 coupe ever built. Yes, I am absolutely biased. The best looking M3 coupe was the e30 M3. For its time, it was impeccable. The e9x line I didn't like as a whole, so I never considered either the coupe or sedan. However, when I buy the new F8x, without a question and even the slightest doubt it will be the M3 sedan. To me, it looks far more aggressive than the M4. IMO the M4 has too much empty space in the 1/4 panel area and not enough angularity. The e46 M3 filled this area nicely with "bulginess", which the M4 lacks. There's more to this than just excessively flared fenders. Hard to explain, I suppose. But to each his own. Everyone has a reason for getting a coupe or a sedan. Personally (looks aside), I won't use the rear doors very often. But I like knowing that I can. I'm sick and tired of folding seats whenever the need to cram someone or something in the rear arises. Over the years my view on coupes with rear seats has evolved to a point where I despise them. And yes, I do drive one. If it's gonna seat 4, give me 4 damn doors. If it's gonna seat only 2, give me a coupe. There's no point in pretending that my coupe doesn't fit 4, comfortably. So by not having an extra set of doors when offered, I'd feel ripped off. I like coupes. I got my e92 when my kids were 3 and 1, and every time I broke my back getting them in the back seat, I thought that it was all worth it because I got the m3 that I dreamed of. I'm pretty sure ill get an m4 but I may wait to see them both in person.

The M4 does look softer but it will also look lower and wider. The M3 will be a good looking sedan but I still suspect the M4 will look better in real life.
The E60 M5 is the coolest sedan of all times IMO but I can probably make a list of 100 coupes that looks better. Sedans has many virtues relative coupes but looks is not one of them. I'll get the F80 though since my kids use the rear seats every day. |

I was actually going to sacrifice utility for looks and get M4, as my wife and I are planning to have a child within a year. But after seeing how good M3 looks, there is no reason for me to make that sacrifice anymore

If we're to go buy the trend set in the last generation, M3 will be heavier but cheaper than M4.
While I'd ordinarily go with the cheaper option because I am cheap, I'd pay extra for a lighter car. So M4 for me. Pseudo palindrome not intended. |

If my wife forbade me to get a coupe, and I needed to get a sedan and then try to justify it by saying that it looked better, this would be the car for me! Maybe there would even be a bunch of guys on a BMW forum who were whipped like I was!

You couldn't go wrong with either one.
If you need the two extra doors, go for the sedan. If not, either one will suffice. Both are gorgeous and will never cease to put a smile on your face when driven properly.
