Cool Parking Assistant in action on my M4

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Nice little cool feature there, very precise. Option code is 5DP - Park Assist

Demonstration on how the Parking Assistant on the BMW M4 works which allows the park itself in parallel parking spots.

That is quite an apt demonstration of how it works in real life - it often misses obvious spaces, takes too long to use vs. doing it yourself, but does do an excellent job of parallel parking... eventually.

Yeah this was my first try with it, as you can see in the video it missed the first parking spot but worked fine on the second one. I think the reason it missed the first one is because there was no car in between it was just the curb followed by the parking space. I don't find myself using it especially if there are cards behind me as it takes some time but what I was impressed with is how accurate it is.

Speaking of which, on my 2017 M4 that I had a few months back, I don't remember seeing those diagonal green/red lines that tell you how to steer when parking, not talking about the car parking itself but even if I were to park it myself, I see lines telling me how much I should steer to park. I don't know if that was there before or if it's a feature of this Park Assistant as well.

They've made minor tweaks like those diagonal lines to the system each year. Its Achilles heel is that it has always needed a faster processor - every action is just a bit...too...slow. It's better in the '18's, but still not great. It's a cool party trick though, but not when you're on a busy street. Cars get annoyed with how long it takes.

This is by design. It's not that the system "missed a spot." The PDC sensors must detect a front and rear vehicle with enough measurable tolerance to auto-park otherwise the system would select a space at the termination of the curb which would risk a parking violation or damage.

Over-engineering? Maybe. But, BMW has already evaluated real world scenarios and programmed the software accordingly.

That explains why it didn't detect the first parking spot in my video as it was the first spot after the curb. Thanks

Yes, it's currently offered on MT vehicles but I declined the feature as I thought functionality is better on AT equipped vehicles plus I don't street park by habit.

It works similarly. You just have to modulate the clutch like you would do parking yourself.

Park Assistant is now included in the exec package (at least on the M3), so more folks will have access to it starting with MY18.

Check this one out, new 7 and 5 can parallel and perpendicular park.

It's a "check me out" feature, but otherwise less effective than parking on your own.

nice to see it work
I have it on my '07 435 and have never used it; I'm a pretty good parallel parker and can get into spots the system wouldn't even attempt.

I have that on my 2016, in one year, I used it once and it was just to try it. Nice on paper, you will definitely park faster, even with less precision ?

Not sure if they had the option or not for the MY15 M4s, but it cannot be coded according to this thread as it needs side sensors in addition to the side cameras: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...7&postcount=13
