Epoxy resin is not UV resistant. You can improve the UV resistance but the epoxy will continue to activate. If I had to make a guess...the top layer is becoming brittle and peeling off. Ideally you'd clear coat the epoxy from the beginning.

I had around 10-20 small chips on the clear coat of my carbon fiber roof. As soon as I noticed them I took the car to dealer and they initially blamed it on rock chips since it was only by the windshield but after they noticed that neither the front bumper nor hood had any noticeable rock chip damage they had it fixed and "refinished" under warranty. The clear coat would flake off pretty easily by lightly rubbing finger over the chips. It seemed very thin. The car is daily driven and left outside. Now I just use Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Liquid Wax after every wash, for hopefully some protection. I just spray it everywhere after a wash then rinse it off. At least it seems to help with keeping plastics looking new.

I just got my roof done in PPF and I'm so glad I did. Yikes.

I enjoy the people that think ceramic coating and ppf the cf parts make them impervious to the sun. Not going to effect it much, cf still going to degrade over time from the UV

Of course it doesn't prevent sun damage or the weather elements. But it's some sort of protective barrier, certainly better than nothing.

The reason I just posted about my experience from over a year ago was because I'm pretty sure the same thing is starting to happen on the roof again . The BMW dealer in my area had the roof refinished at a BMW auto body shop owned by them.
I'm starting to see at least 3 "large" air pockets under the resin. The damage seems to just be related to hot temperatures and not rock chips, as the car has not been driven much lately. And you can feel the slight bumps on the clear coat from the air pockets. There are additional smaller air pockets grouped together along the passenger side, right along the windshield as well. I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time until these air pockets will pop as they weren't there, or this big, like 2-3 months ago. I'll likely have to go back to the dealer to see if they can provide any additional details to what they did when they "refinished" it as getting it refinished again would likely result in the same thing happening in another 2 years. May have to do a full roof replacement or clear coat it instead of using the resin? I dunno I used to use the windshield washer fluid almost daily before the first time this happened so I stopped using that after I got the roof refinished, incase maybe moisture/chemicals from that was affecting the roof in that area, but I had stopped that and so that wasn't the cause of this issue originally. Also rock chips aren't causing this as these are air pockets. The only possible explanation seems to be that there are some roof just defective straight from the manufacturer, as there should be a lot more of these happening especially in hotter areas than where I live. I also wash my car, myself, by hand, at least once every week or 2 so it's not a neglected car either. But it is left outside Excuse the pictures of the dirty car thats due for a wash. |

I am looking at a 2015 out in Santa Monica CA that has some spots on the roof that are starting to peel. What have some of you other guys paid to have the roof gel removed re-cleared? Also, any recommended shops out in that area or near Washington DC to have it done?
Thanks! |

I got my roof redone last month by BumperDoc in Escondido. Cost was $1500
Here is the process BD explained. They removed front and rear glass. They said there was 50% chance they could break the glass when removing. If they broke it, i would have to pay for replacement. Removed headliner to disconnect the antenna(fin). Sanded and new clear coat. They gave me a lifetime warranty on the clear not failing.

I sealed mine with The Last Coat spray on multiple layers for my 2015. So far so good. No peeling anywhere.
