I was giving to work, on a normal street.
I was at a red light turning left. CHP officer was a few cars behind me (didn't see him) on his motorcycle. When it turned green I turned and punched it a little -- enough to open up the exhaust but not enough to break the speed limit. He followed me for a little then pulled me over. Wasn't nice, no warning -- just said my "exhaust was too loud and he could hear it echoing off the hills". No DB meter or anything crazy. Just someone who was grumpy! |

That's a decent step but IMO it doesn't address the real problem of police issuing tickets based on zero actual evidence. If they measured your exhaust as being too loud then sure, write that ticket, but that's not how it works of course. From every description I've read from people who got these tickets the best you can hope for is that they're writing them when they actually think the exhaust is too loud. All too often though it's written based on the mistaken belief that anything aftermarket is automatically illegal. Even worse it's written because they just want to get the driver for something (usually the sin of being in an area where a car meet happened) and exhaust tickets are subjective anyway so nobody can prove it was written in bad faith.

Never knew about this. Will have to be careful from now on lol
I've been driving in sport+ around several local police cars in the bay area and haven't been cited for anything yet. I guess no more sport+ for me on local roads |

California Bill to Amend 2018 Exhaust Noise Law Passes Legislature
SB 112 removes cars from the impact of AB 1824, which was signed into law in June of 2018. Thanks to the efforts of Assembly Members Tim Grayson (D-Concord), Tasha Boerner-Horvath (D-Oceanside), Phil Ting (D-San Francisco), Phil Chen (R-Diamond Bar), Senator Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) and enthusiasts throughout California, state lawmakers have approved SEMA-supported legislation (SB 112) that restores “fix-it” tickets for cars suspected of violating the state’s exhaust noise limit. Once signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom, SB 112 will take effect immediately. SB 112, a budget implementation (trailer) bill, includes text drawn from SEMA-sponsored AB 390, which was authored by Assembly Members Grayson and Jim Frazier in early 2019. Under normal legislative procedure, AB 390 would not have been implemented until January 2020. “SEMA thanks Assembly Members Grayson, Boerner-Horvath, Ting and Chen, and Senator Mitchell for their tireless work on behalf of the over 1,700 member companies based in the Golden State,” said Daniel Ingber, SEMA’s vice president for legal and government affairs. “Thanks to their efforts, enthusiasts in California will continue to be afforded due process under the law.” SB 112 removes cars from the impact of AB 1824, which was signed into law in June of 2018. AB 1824 amended how California law enforcement officials issued citations for suspected exhaust noise violations by eliminating the ability to issue fix-it tickets, which allowed for 30-days to correct a violation. Instead, motorists received an immediate fine. The bill generated significant concern within the specialty automotive aftermarket industry and enthusiast community. Once signed into law by Gov. Newsom, SB 112 will again allow law enforcement to issue fix-it tickets. Since 2003, exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles in California with a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, may not exceed a sound level of 95 decibels when tested under a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) procedure. SB 112 does not change this. link: https://www.sema.org/sema-enews/2019...campaign=eNews

Just to give you guys a heads up. The vehicle code violation for exhaust violations does not require LEOs to use a dB meter out in the field. The law states cite able for “loud and unusual” noise, so even some stock exhausts would get you this ticket. However this is usually beatable.
Also the CVC 27156(b) - “modified emissions” is the non correctable “state ref” ticket. This one is for any non CARB approved emissions modifications. (You don’t want this ticket) Im free to answer any questions if you guys have any. |

a new law to ensure more revenue for the state.. nothing more than aggravate the car owners, bad enough with the highest fuel cost as is already.. more pain in the @$$ by some political clowns with an agenda on their minds.
