Another alternative is to apply a nice thick layer of quality car wax with good UV protection properties. And if your waxing the roof and other carbon parts might as well wax the whole car to give it extra protection from other contaminants as well.

The PPF is for rock chips so it doesn't start the degrading process.

The carbon resin should have UV protectant in it.

Clearly it's not working on these 3 roofs.

No idea.

Although given no UV protection I fail to see why that would matter.

The PPF is to protect against rock chips, which could compromise the integrity of the clear coat if a rock did chip through somewhere. The reason this matters is that once moisture begins to creep into the carbon fiber roof it's game over for the clear coat. Not sure how much the UV would affect it as it's more than likely a heat + moisture problem. The main concern I had (for my ride) was selecting the correct bug juice for the windshield washer fluid. Since I'm in the PNW I like to use the stuff that de-ices the windshield as well and I had no clue what BMW would do if I had an issue like this and they tried to blame my bug juice!

In this case if it was UV related then there would be a ton of cars in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California that would have this problem.

I should point out that the OP's post, especially with the little spots all over look like an issue that started at the edge and worked its way inward. Could be a manufacturing defect indeed or if there was a rock chip somewhere near that area that let moisture get in as the clear coat delaminated more moisture was able to penetrate the entire carbon weave. Just a theory.

Florida doesn't have gravel all over the road causing issues like this (and where 2 of the 3 listed are from).

It's sun damage that any who live in Florida has seen plenty of cars with similar issues.

Therefore suspect Las Vegas car is also sun damaged out in the 100+ degree desert. And not much humidity in the desert.

I took it in for service as soon as the first peel started. Remember I've been trying to fix this since October of 2017. BMW rejected to fix it 3 different times and 2 different locations. I've taken in to multiple reputable body shops and they don't guarantee they can fix it. The most they can commit to is to pain it black or white.

That it could be. I do use the Rainx washer fluid but I am sure I am not only one.

I did not install protection on mine. If I knew then what I know now I would definitely apply some kind of protections.

Just to reiterate, this is happening all over the roof including middle and back where rocks don't hit.

Probably more

Clearly it's Sun/UV related, not malicious or road debris related.

I would say that if you have car in Florida and in Southwest desert areas you really need to considering having extra protection applied.

There were some M Performance F8x Spoilers in the last year that started losing their clear coat as well.

Wonder if this was a bad run early on or more will begin to show up.

FWIW: I took my CS in for service here in Tampa a week ago and saw a Yas Marina F80 with a bad case of peeling CF roof. The common theme here seems to be daily driven/sun baked cars in FL/SW USA. This car in particular looked like it hadn't had a bath in a year.

Get a hold of a proper contact @ BMW, NA. Be persistent! They need to address this.

I've always gotten good result this way. Albeit, my contact is in Germany.

As long as you can document your history of having contacted BMW, NA
and/or dealerships previously - while still under warranty.

* Mathias.Babbel@bmw-m.com

If he can't help you he should be able to re-direct you to the correct contact @ BMW, NA

Otherwise... The new (part #41318057027) cost $4k!?!

Cheers!

OP, sorry to hear about your plight. That definitely looks like a defect or the result of extreme heat to me. I've never seen anything like that here in California. A quality car cover could help prevent this as well.

There is a person with same issue in AZ and/or Vegas.

Palm Springs wouldn't surprise me either.
