Some of my favorite time as a car owner was when I was driving 36k+ miles per year (a lot of work travel). The way I did it was to have a RWD car and an AWD car at the same time. Take the RWD car most of the time in the summer and the AWD car most of the time in the winter. This setup allowed me to switch cars whenever bored of one and also helped keep the mileage a bit more normal for the two cars.

Was fun, but I drive about 4k miles a year now... so can't justify it.
Can I know that AWD car you have? I am currently consider buying one for winter.

This is what some of my buddies do too. In cases where their spouses don't really drive their cars much, they just split time between the sports car and the whatever-soccermom-car

When i owned my F80 from 2015 to 2018, like clockwork, I replaced the rear tires every 8,400 miles (85% city/15% hwy). I turned in the lease at 25,000 miles. The original front tires after 25,000 miles were practically still new.

Does anyone want to take a guess what a 2018 Comp Pack with a 100K+ miles will be selling for in 3 years?

One that currently sells for 52K today

I'd guess actual sale price would be somewhere in the high 20's to low 30's assuming good condition (maintenance kept up, no repairs needed, paint still good).

Basically there are a few low mileage '15's listed on CarGurus and Cars around $42k right now and a few high mileage ones at about $30k right now. Seems to average out to a $0.15/mile hit. In this example, age would impart ~$10k of depreciation while mileage for 100k miles would represent ~$12k of impact vs a 20k mile car totaling $22k over 3 years. Of note, '15s did not have Comp Package, so perhaps this imparts back ~$1k in value somewhere.

This may feel like a lot, but realize just owning the M3/4 means it's going to deprecate ~$3-3.5k/year regardless of how much you drive it. Since you already won the vehicle, your driving cost for 26k+ miles/year is actually only $4k/year.

I had an RS4 for winter at the time. With winter tires, that thing was unstoppable.

That makes sense, I figured value around 24K in my calculations just to be safe. I also figured inflation would add another 1K in resale vs a current 2015, not sure what the base prices of these cars have gone up in the last 3 years

Looks like tires (rear) will last somewhere in the neighborhood of 15K Miles

That just leaves personal preference (4 hrs each way in M4, like or don't like)vs I get to drive a fun car while I'm down here.

Will definitely need some type of clear protection up front

I would think trade in value would be low to mid 20s.

I have an F80 M3 with the competition package but my daily is a GTI SE with an MT. It's makes a very fun, engaging daily and I don't worry about some distracted commuter hitting my M3.

My first 10k miles I was left with 7/32nd treads left. Now that I've hit 20k, I'm left with 4/32nd. The high torque kills these tires.

I would consider you very fortunate to get 20k miles out of your rear tires.

I do mostly highway(winters tires helped with longevity) and the 6mt traction on 1st and 2nd is no bueno so I don't romp on those gears.

You'd get pretty annoyed having to deal with that for 600 miles each week. It would be a great weekend car that you can take on your commute every now and then, but it wouldn't be pleasurable to designate as your commuter car. I'd look for something that is still special and quick but just more comfortable. If you want an M car then an M5/M6 might suit you better if you like those cars (haven't driven one but I'm sure they're more comfortable).
Definitely personal preference. I had a ///M4 comp for about 2.5 years and a have a ///M3 CS now. 95% of my driving is highway and I never minded the stiffness. If anything, I hate driving it on poorly maintained neighborhood roads in NJ/PA (particularly Philly).

Then I get into my wife's RAV-4 on the highway...I sure do miss the ///M when I do.

*EDIT*

I usually go through tires once a year (or about 14k miles).

Don't like the fact that right now I'm always paying depreciation and insurance on a car that I'm not driving.

What is everyones opinion? Is the M4 meant for this? Is it silly to get a car that is meant for spirited driving and twisties but most of its life will be 75MPH in a straight line.

I'm thinking the M4 will be worth low 20K in 3 years with 100K miles, does that sound right?

My other option would be a Golf R, seems more practical but always wanted an M4 (3)

I plan to rent an M3 on Turo just to get a feel for it before I decide

Thanks
Tires; I'm seeing about 16-18k on a set of rears. A puncture at 12k caused me to replace both rears of my first set. The current pair has about 13 on them and I figure this winter they'll go (probably 5k more over this year) Fronts wear much better, at least until you start driving the car hard in the twisties routinely with factory camber. Highway and straight-line, they should last through 2 sets of rears.

I understand disliking the annual costs of a second car that's just sitting, but that's part of the bargain if you need a 'treat' type of car in your life. I've found my peace with this over the years as I'm too anal-retentive over the treat car as respects dings/gravel/asshole drivers etc. to drive it every day.

I'd say expect it to be worth 17-18k at 100k miles in 3 to 3.5 years and you shouldn't be too disappointed with the real result.

Golf R not a bad idea. If you don't need the AWD, I'd question just how much better it is than the GTI though, as that car is a bundle of fun. And a much better distance eater than you'd think. I'd prefer something a bit bigger and more substantial feeling doing mainly this kind of highway driving myself, but can see the allure.

S6 or M550i.
I couldn't agree more. If I wanted, preferred, or needed to go to a single car and had a commute above 10-15 miles in any congestion, these would be the front runners. If they're simply too big for OP, the M340i may be a good change of pace.

This is why I roll with Michelin Sport A/S 3+

All season tire. Lasts longer. Performance isn't sacrificed unless you track and I can confidently go through rain or light snow if necessary.

Ended up keeping the CX5, its at 117K miles with absolutely no issues at all. I did the front pads the other day, they still had 10-15% life on them, $45. If you want to rack up the miles its not a bad way to go.

A few months back ending up getting an 2004 M3, with 33K miles on it for the weekend. This will take care of my fun itch and I shouldn't see any depreciation. Brand new Michelins, near mint, sub frame reinforced, don't need o worry about Rod Bearings for a long while and hopefully the vanos for a couple more years.

Last year at the end of March I put new Goodyear Supercar 3 tires on my F80 and the fronts lasted about 6000 miles, 3 track days, 1 autocross, and one skidpad event. The shoulders on the fronts were gone at the end of the summer and I replaced them for this season. The rears have 1-2 track days in them. The car wears the fronts much more than the rears due to understeering - that has been my experience. The rears would have been like new if it wasn't for that skidpad event - total waste of time and rubber.
