Dealer is noting me that my Rear brakes need attention.

Hey everybody,

Instant regret today taking my car into the dealer and getting my front brakes replaced (rotor and pads). Cost is crazy but learning that more than ever. Apart from that, they like to do their fancy "inspection" and now they're telling me that my rear brakes need attention. Now, bear in mind that I have NEVER taken my car to the track so I know for sure there could be some dealer bs going on here but then again I'm not that familiar with the use of brakes so much. My 2015 M4 has only 38,950 Miles, does it sound right that they should get replaced so early when my car is telling me they should get checked at around 70,000 miles?

I don't drive crazy and the car stays put in the garage. I use another vehicle when I go to work.

Sorry if I sound relatively new to this stuff. 2 years ago I was scared to even change my own oil and now I do it every year with ease. Is it hard to change the brakes if needed? (rotors and pads).

Do let me know what you guys think

Best way to determine if they need some love is to visually inspect. Look at the pad depth in the rear by removing the wheel and inspecting both the inside and outside pads. Report back and we can further assist.

Hopefully, the files are uploaded. These are screenshots of a video my service advisor sent me. I know it isn't much but this weekend I'm going to look at the depth of the pads myself and let you know.

Again, I appreciate it!

At first glance those do look quite worn. Looking forward to your update.

The M4 has a brake pad wear sensor. It'll light up on iDrive once the pads reach replacement level. If it's not lit up I would tell the dealer to go pound sand.

My dealer told me to replace my pads at 25k. I checked after leaving and they were 75-80% pad remaining. I wouldn't trust them. Check yourself or rely on iDrive to let you know.

I would also concur the pads are getting close to the end of their service life. Not dire, but also why not? From an an Indy probably $400 or less.

It really depends on individual driving habit and pattern (mostly city vs mostly highway vs mixed).

OP, it's hard to tell from the picture but is the yellow part of the pad what's left of the pad material?

Also I agree with another member that I'd wait until the brake sensor tells you it's time to change. That's why they have it there.

The sensor is only on one side per axle so take the readings with a grain of salt.

^^^^This X1000

Also, if you're going to replace the pads do yourself a favor and get Akebono pads, your wheels will thank you

Cheaper, the difference in brake dust is huge. They perform almost the same so unless you track your car and get a feel for different pads you won't notice a difference.
